Reasons why deadlift might not be for everyone

Deadlift is, undenieably, an intense exercise. One truth is that it is quite effective, which is the reason why most people add it to their weight training routine. Even if they struggle or hate the ruthless exercise, they do not mind bearing a little bit of pain to get in shape. This one move can help to target multiple muscles of your body from your shoulders to the legs, providing the benefits of a full-body exercise. But let's be honest, is it alright to continue this traditional workout even if it makes you feel miserable all the time? Absolutely not!

No matter how amazing this exercise is, you can skip it from your workout routine, without too much stress. We will tell you why deadlift might not be for everyone and why it is alright to skip it.

2/7

If you have a back pain

If you are already suffering from back pain, performing a deadlift can make it worse. Being a full-body intense workout, the deadlift can put excessive stress on your lower back leading to slip-disc or fracture. While dealing with some health concerns, it is better to avoid less intense exercise to avoid worsening of pain. Performing this move even if your body is not supporting can be an invitation to mishaps.

If you have trouble getting into a position

To gain benefits from any move, you need to perform it well. The first step is to get into the correct form. Your feet should be wide apart, spine straight and head straight. If you cannot keep your body in the correct posture then you won't gain any benefits from this exercise. For any reason, be it due to weak core muscles or injury, if you are not able to get into the right form then you must avoid this exercise. It is better to skip them than to do it in an incorrect manner.

Other alternatives to try

Many exercises can give you the benefit of a deadlift. If you are not able to perform this particular exercise, add other exercises to your routine to target the same muscle group. These exercises are easy on the lower back and the risk of injury is also low. Here are three exercises you can add to your routine:

5/7

Bulgarian split squat with dumbbells

Step 1: Stand in front of a bench at a two feet distance with your back facing the bench.

Step 2: Keep your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand. Look forward and keep your shoulders neutral.

Step 3: Put your right foot on the bench behind you and try to maintain your body weight on the left foot.

Step 4: Squeeze your glute, engage your core, bend your right knee and lower your pelvis toward the ground. At the same time allow your left knee and ankle to bend naturally.

Step 5: Go down until your left thigh is parallel to the floor. Make sure your knee doesn't fall over your toes.

Step 6: Pause for 2-3 seconds, then press through your left foot to return to the starting position. Do 10 reps of this exercise, then switch your leg.

6/7

Hip thrust

Step 1: Sit on the mat with your back towards an elevated surface.

Step 2: Lean your upper back against the surface and bend your knees. Your feet should be flat on the floor.

Step 3: Add barbell to your hip crease.

Step 4: Squeeze your glutes and core muscles to lift your hips off the floor.

Step 5: Lift it till your back is parallel to the floor. Pause for 4-5 seconds and then go back to the starting position.

7/7

Glute bridge

Step 1: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the ground.

Step 2: Press your feet into the floor, inhale and lift your hips rolling the spine off the floor.

Step 4: Press your shoulders and arms on the ground to lift your chest.

Step 5: Engage your legs and butt muscles to lift your hips higher.

Step 6: Hold this position for a few breaths, return to the starting position.
