5 gym mistakes that can put heart health at risk

Physical activity has shown to improve cardiovascular health. From lowering to reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes, exercise is well-known for its heart-healthy benefits. But what if some mistakes you make at the gym become threatening for your heart? Below are evidence based gym mistakes that can put heart health at risk.

2/6

Overexertion

Pushing the body beyond limits without progressive buildup, can put the heart at risk. Studies show that vigorous exertion can temporarily increase the risk of acute cardiovascular events.
Tip: Warm up for 10 to 15 minutes with light activity before jumping to high intensity workouts.

3/6

Overstraining and inadequate rest

Not giving the body time to rest and recover can become a major red flag. According to PMC, heavy training loads without enough rest have shown to change heart rate and bp responses. These factors somewhat indicate that the cardiovascular system is under strain.
Tip: Schedule at least one or two days off from intense training.

4/6

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance

During gym hours, body tends to lose water and electrolytes. We all know that electrolytes play an important role in maintaining cardiovascular functions, and studies show that any disruption with them can put strain on the heart.
Keep hydrating yourself before, after and during work-outs. Also, consider electrolyte rich beverages (limited amounts) if you follow long sessions.

5/6

Poor exercise technique or form

Performing exercises with incorrect technique or poor form can place unnecessary stress on the heart. Studies show, even breathing technique influences arterial blood pressure during heavy weight lifting. Consulting with professionals helps perform proper techniques or breathing patterns.

6/6

Ignoring warning signs during workouts

One of the most critical mistakes in ignoring warning signs. This doesn’t only apply for gym goers, but for everyone in general. Gym and exercising is particularly dangerous because physical exertion can trigger acute cardiac events in susceptible individuals.
Warning signs can include: Chest pain or discomfort, excessive shortness of breath, dizziness or light-headedness, irregular heartbeat, or extreme fatigue.
