Why you must not have water when having your meal

Life on the Earth is possible because of water. Our body needs water to flush out toxins, carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells, keep our skin healthy and lubricate our joints. But time and again, Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine system has reiterated that one can only avail all the benefits of drinking sufficient amounts of water if they drink it correctly. That's right. If you are one of those who chugs a glass of water in one go, you need to stop doing this right now. As per Ayurveda, drinking water incorrectly may lead to many problems, one of them being disrupting the digestion process.

How water can disrupt the digestion process

Proper digestion of food is essential for the absorption of nutrients. When you drink excessive water before starting the meal or drink in between the meal, it might lead to poor digestive health, suggest Ayurveda. It is believed that doing this impacts the state of the food in the stomach directly. Besides, water is a coolant and can calm the digestive fire during mealtime. Sipping water regularly during the meal can also lead to obesity.

The right way to drink water

First of all, never chug a glass of water in one go. Drink it slowly sip by sip.

Secondly, never drink water right before eating your meal or after it. This can dilute the gastric juice, making it difficult for your system to digest and absorb nutrients from the food.

If you are thirsty, drink water 30 minutes before your mealtime or wait for 30 minutes after your meal.

While having a meal if you feel parched, have 1-2 sips of water not a glass of it.

Also, drink warm water for better digestion of food. Warm water is more hydrating than a glass of cold water.

Why you should not stand and drink water

Another thing that you must do when drinking water is still down and have it. When you stand and have a glass of water, you put yourself at the risk of several health problems.

5/5

What happens when you drink water standing

When you drink water while standing, it passes through the system with a straight gush. It easily passes from your body and reaches the colon. Drinking it slowly allows the fluid to reach all the organs of the body, where it is supposed to do the job. This results in the deposition of toxins from the kidneys and the bladder. Moreover, gulping down the water does not really quench your thirst.
