Stop eating these three food items to get rid of acne

Tell us if this sounds familiar. You are prepping up for a big event and everything seems to be going according to the plan. You have the right attire, your footwear looks amazing and luckily even your hair decides to co-operate. Guess who comes to spoil the party? Yes, an angry red pimple which was nowhere to be seen, rears its ugly head.

2/7

The dreaded acne

Breakouts are one of the most dreaded skincare problems and it is important to understand that stress and lack of sleep can wreak serious havoc on your skin. The sad part about acne is, these pesky pimples can linger long after the teenage years are over. Did you know that according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), adult acne is on the rise? Yes, adult-onset acne is on the rise in women over the age of 25.

3/7

The link between food and acne

A lot of people believe that investing in expensive skincare products and treatments can lead to clearer, acne-free skin. However, it is important to understand that issues like acne are often due to dietary mistakes which can play a significant role in inflammation of these pesky pimples.

What you eat has a huge impact on your overall body functions including your skin. A lot of recent studies have shed light on the link between dietary habits and acne eruptions.

4/7

What does the study say

According to a study conducted by the School of Applied Sciences, RMIT University, nutrition-related lifestyle factors play a role in acne pathogenesis. The study compared the effect of a high-protein, low glycemic-load diet and a conventional, high glycemic-load diet on acne formation. However, these preliminary findings need to to be confirmed by similar studies. If you are on a quest to get avoid the dreaded breakouts, we list down 3 food items that you must avoid.

5/7

Refined carbs and sugar

Analyze your eating habits to check whether you are consuming more added sugars and refined carbohydrates. Eating food items with high glycemic index--including white bread, potatoes, pasta made with white flour, soda and sugar-laden products--causes a spike in your blood sugar. It may cause your skin to produce more oil and cause inflammation, leading to more acne. While more research is needed for definitive proof, you can put refined grains and sugars on your acne radar.

6/7

Milk and milk-based products

If you are suffering from frequent breakouts, we suggest putting a pause on the consumption of milk and dairy-based products. While there is a lack of a clear link, certain studies have suggested that consuming milk, ice-cream and other dairy products may aggravate acne. Cow’s milk also promotes an insulin-like hormone called IGF-1, which has been linked to increased acne severity.

7/7

Fried and processed food

This one is a no-brainer. For the same reasons as mentioned above, one must strictly avoid junk, fried and processed food items if you are battling active acne. According to a research published in the Journal of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, foods rich in saturated and trans fats stimulate the production of hormones that can cause excess secretion of oil. So, the next time you wake up with a zit on your face, it is strongly advisable to recall what you ate yesterday.
