Diet has the power to keep the heart healthy

One of the main causes of death around the world is heart disease, but the good news is that you can control it and even reverse it by making healthy choices. Diet is one of the most powerful tools. Some foods can help lower blood pressure, improve heart function, and stop plaque from building up.

2/7

Go plant based or mostly plant based

Eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts gives your heart fiber, antioxidants, and good fats. Diets that are mostly made up of plants, like the Mediterranean diet, have been shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

3/7

Cut down on saturated and trans fats

Red meat, butter, cheese, and processed snacks and fried foods are all high in saturated fats and trans fats, which can raise LDL cholesterol. Instead, pick fats that are better for you, like those in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil.

4/7

Choose whole grains over refined grains

Whole grains like oats, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread are high in fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and make digestion better. Refined grains, such as white bread and sugary cereals, can raise blood sugar levels and make heart problems more likely.

5/7

Reduce salt and sugar intake

Too much salt can raise blood pressure, and diabetes and being overweight can both make heart disease more likely. To keep track of how much sugar and salt you eat, read food labels, stay away from processed foods, and cook at home.

6/7

Add superfoods that are good for your heart

Include foods like leafy greens, berries, fatty fish like salmon or sardines, garlic, and green tea in your meals. These are full of nutrients that help blood flow, lower inflammation, and keep the heart working well.

A heart-healthy diet is one that limits unhealthy fats, salt, and sugar and focuses on whole, natural foods. Following a healthy diet consistently and carefully can help control and even reverse some of the effects of heart disease.

Exercise is medicine for the heart

Along with a balanced diet, regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to protect and even reverse heart disease risk. Doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, most days of the week. Exercise improves circulation, lowers blood pressure, helps maintain a healthy weight, and strengthens the heart muscle. Even simple habits like taking the stairs, stretching during work breaks, or doing yoga can make a big difference.
