A study in food Hydrocolloids shows that peels of citrus fruits are rich in dietary fibers. In addition, lemon peels provide some of the essential nutrients like calcium, potassium, magnesium and vitamin C.

Lemon peels have antibacterial properties. According to a study in the journal of food science and technology, lemon peel extracts actively inhibited the growth of harmful oral bacteria, which supported oral hygiene and gum health.

In fact the researchers highlighted that lemon peel is often treated as waste despite being a rich source of bioactive compounds.

Bioactive compounds in lemon peels, like flavonoids and fiber, have been linked to improved cardiovascular markers. A study by Iran University of Medical Sciences showed that adolescents with excess weight and obesity who took a supplement containing lemon peel reduced their blood pressure and LDL (or "bad") cholesterol levels.

The potential cancer-fighting properties of lemon and other citrus peels are likely due to their antioxidant properties. These compounds can promote the growth of healthy cells in the body. A research in database platform Taylor & Francis have shown a link between the higher consumption of citrus fruits and their peels, including lemons, to a lower risk of developing certain cancers.
