Consuming these 5 herbal beverages daily can help maintain blood sugar levels

Maintaining balanced blood sugar levels is essential for overall health and especially for people dealing with diabetes or prediabetes. Along with healthy lifestyle practices like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, incorporating herbal drinks can compliment the effectiveness. US National Institutes of Health (NIH) research suggests that certain herbal teas may support blood sugar regulation and improve insulin sensitivity. These beverages can serve as both a therapeutic and enjoyable way to support metabolic health naturally.(Image credits: Canva)

Bitter gourd juice

Bitter gourd, also known as karela in India, is commonly used in traditional medicine and is well known for its anti-diabetic properties. A study found that the hypoglycemic effects of bitter gourd may be beneficial in Diabetes patients to reduce the blood glucose level.
Also, its active compounds, including charantin and polypeptide-p, are believed to mimic insulin and enhance glucose uptake.
Preparation:
Take one medium sized bitter gourd and cut it into small pieces after washing it thoroughly. Blend with ½ cup of water until smooth, add salt or lemon if required, to enhance taste. Strain the juice, and drink daily on an empty stomach.

3/10

Methi water

Research published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders found, taking 10 grams of fenugreek daily helped people with prediabetes lower their risk of developing diabetes. Fenugreek or methi, has been traditionally used for its medicinal promises. The seeds are rich in soluble fiber and bioactive compounds like 4-hydroxyisoleucine, which may improve insulin sensitivity and slow the absorption of sugar after meals.
Preparation: Take 1 or 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds and rinse them. Soak the seeds in one cup of water overnight. In the morning, strain the mixture and drink on an empty stomach.

4/10

Cinnamon tea

Research concludes that cinnamon tea significantly decreases postprandial maximum glucose level in nondiabetic adults. Cinnamon has been traditionally used as a spice and natural remedy for blood sugar management. Its active compounds, particularly cinnamaldehyde, may mimic insulin and improve the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels.
Preparation: Add 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks in boiling water and simmer for some time strain in a cup and enjoy the beverage after heavy meals as it can help reduce most-meal (postprandial) sugar spikes.

5/10

Hibiscus tea

NIH research suggests hibiscus tea has great potential for preventing or managing diabetes and its related health problems. Hibiscus tea, made from the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower, is rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins. These antioxidants may help reduce oxidative stress and support overall metabolic health.
Preparation: Boil 1 cup of water and pour over 1 or 2 teaspoons of dried hibiscus petals. Steep for 5 minutes and strain in a cup.

6/10

Aloevera juice

A research in the International Journal of Health and Research found that the administration of aloe vera juice helped in controlling the blood sugar level among Diabetics, and aloe vera can be used as an adjuvant therapy in treating patients with Diabetes. Its bioactive compounds, particularly polysaccharides, may help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce fasting blood glucose levels. Aloe vera also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can support overall metabolic health.
Preparation:

Take 1 or 2 teaspoons of pure aloe vera gel from a fresh leaf or a food-grade extract. Mix in a glass of water and stir well. Drink on an empty stomach in the morning. For best results, use consistently and monitor blood sugar levels under medical supervision.

7/10

Maximize benefits with healthy lifestyle habits

While these herbal beverages can support healthy blood sugar levels, their benefits are maximized when combined with a healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity helps your body use insulin more efficiently, a balanced diet stabilizes blood sugar throughout the day, adequate sleep ensures proper hormonal regulation, and stress management reduces cortisol-related spikes in glucose. It’s important to note that not every drink is suitable for everyone. For example, bitter gourd juice may lower blood sugar too much for people on diabetes medication, and aloe vera can cause digestive discomfort if over consumed. Always consult your healthcare provider before incorporating these beverages into your routine, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking medications.

Monitoring your body's response and making gradual adjustments can help ensure these remedies are both safe and effective in supporting long-term metabolic health.
