Constipated all the time? 5 doctor-approved food combinations that help you poop naturally

Relief from constipation need not be complicated. As Dr. Alka Phutela, an eminent dietitian, shares through her practical posts, the answer sometimes lies in simple day-to-day food combinations chosen at the right time. These combinations draw upon nature's best ingredients, combining hydration, fiber, and soothing effects for your digestive tract in gentle yet effective ways.

2/8

Habits that can reset our gut

Before getting into the specific food combinations, there's a fundamental lifestyle choice to be kept in mind to keep your gut moving as it should. Dr. Alka emphasizes a few daily routines:

Drink 2–3 liters of water a day to keep things running smooth.

Add fiber-rich fruits and veggies to every meal, as fiber helps bulk up stool and makes it easier to pass.

Move your body daily; even a brisk 15-minute walk can make a big difference in gut motility.

Manage stress. There is a direct impact of stress on gut motility and, consequently, on digestive comfort.

With that said, let's get into Dr. Alka's favorite natural food combos that can help alleviate constipation symptoms.

3/8

Prunes + CCF Water (Cumin, Coriander, Fennel)

Prunes owe their fame to the easy laxative action due to the high content of sorbitol and fiber. Combine prunes with a glass of CCF water, which is an Ayurvedic concoction of cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds steeped in hot water, to get a potent, natural laxative. Aromatic spices stimulate digestive enzymes and soothe bloating, while prunes get your gut moving.

When to have it: It is best in the evening or just before going to bed. This way, the digestive system has ample time overnight to act on the blend for a comfortable morning bowel movement.

4/8

Aloe Vera Juice + Pear

Aloe vera juice is soothing, mildly hydrating, and known well in Ayurveda for its gut-calming properties. Pear happens to be one of the highest-fiber fruits. Combining these two provides an advantage on two fronts: aloe vera soothes any irritation in the intestines, while pear's fiber and natural sugars gently encourage peristalsis, the wave-like movement your gut needs to pass stool.

When to have it: The ideal time to have this would be mid-morning or before lunch, when your stomach is not full. You get maximum absorption of nutrients without overloading the digestion.

5/8

Papaya + Warm Lemon Water

Fresh papaya is packed with digestive enzymes-primarily papain-and a lot of water-soluble fiber. Putting together papaya and a glass of warm lemon water is a classic morning cleanse. Lemon provides vitamin C and a gentle acid kick for stimulating gut motility, while the warm water relaxes and hydrates your intestines to make the papaya work more effectively.

When to have it: Early morning is the best time. This combination can help start your day with regular and smooth digestion, especially when consumed on an empty stomach.

6/8

Chia Water + Kiwi

Chia seeds are little fiber powerhouses, swelling up with liquid and creating a gel-like consistency that helps move the stool through the colon. Kiwi adds a fresh, tangy boost packed with additional fiber and digestive enzymes-actinidin. This combination works both as a mild cleanse and immunity boost.

When to have it: Take this combination before breakfast or before going to the gym for an energized and detoxified feel. Many like to have chia water and kiwi first thing in the morning to encourage an on-time bathroom visit, especially if constipation is an issue.

7/8

Banana + Buttermilk

If your stomach feels upset or irritated due to any digestive flare-ups, try taking a calming mix of ripe banana and buttermilk. The banana is gentle on the stomach and provides all good prebiotics and potassium, while buttermilk simultaneously adds probiotics and good bacteria to help support proper digestion. Together, they ease up inflammation, support a healthy gut environment and keep things moving slowly.

When to have it: This combination works best mid-morning or after lunch — both as a light snacking option and following a heavier meal to assist in digestion.

8/8

Turning these combos in our daily ritual

Dr. Alka's approach is refreshingly simple. She suggests listening to one's body, sticking to a routine with these combinations, and adjusting their times according to one's needs. Start with hydration, make movement a non-negotiable, load up on fiber, and then try these soothing, fiber-rich pairings. You really don't need expensive supplements or strong medications for most cases of mild constipation; nature often provides what you need

Pairing the right fruits with soothing liquids at the right time can gently support our digestive system and help with occasional stomach-related issues, such as constipation. It is imperative to understand that these solutions are not for chronic constipation and if the issues persist, it is better to consult a medical health professional, as it could be an underlying symptom of a disease not been well diagnosed. As Dr. Alka emphasises, blending evidence-backed nutrition with traditional wisdom makes the gut happy.
