Benefits of eating avocados

Avocados have earned a unique place in the gastronomic sphere, gaining global popularity for their unique taste and exceptional nutritional benefits. These fruits defy conventional fruit classifications with their high levels of healthy fats, fiber and protein. Loaded with monounsaturated fats, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin E, and carotenoids, they are low in sugar, salt, and LDL cholesterol, a great addition to any healthy diet.

Furthermore, they serve as an excellent plant-based alternative to animal-based products. The shift from saturated fats in processed meats, butter, and cheese to monounsaturated fats found in avocados is a great alternative.

Incorporating avocados into regular diets has been associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes, aligning well with renowned healthy diets such as the Mediterranean and DASH diets.

They are also very versatile and easily fit into an array of dishes, from sauces to salads to meat substitutes, and have become a delicious addition to a balanced and nutrient-filled diet.

They bring an extensive range of advantages to human health, from aiding heart health to improving cognitive function. In this article, Rima Rao-- Consultant Dietitian and Nutritionist Convenor, shares the many benefits of having avocados.

Vitamins and minerals galore

Avocados boast of an impressive range of essential minerals and vitamins, including potassium, magnesium, copper, and various B-group vitamins. Surprisingly, they contain more potassium gram per gram than bananas.

Heart health champion

The abundant monounsaturated fats in avocados set them apart. These heart-healthy fats help lower LDL cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. They are rich in potassium, magnesium, fiber, folate, monounsaturated fats and antioxidants— all essential components for reducing the risk of heart disease. Studies have shown that incorporating avocados into your diet can lead to a significant decrease in the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease.

Fighting type 2 diabetes

With minimal sugar content and a low glycemic index, avocados can be instrumental in improving insulin sensitivity and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. By replacing saturated fats from animal products with those from avocados, individuals can make a positive impact on their metabolic health.

Combatting obesity and metabolic syndrome

The combination of fiber and monounsaturated fats in avocados can increase feelings of satiety and help in healthy eating when consumed in appropriate amounts. The unique composition of bioactive compounds and other nutrients may help mitigate the risk of metabolic syndrome- a combination of obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes

Aiding digestion and bowel health

A healthy gut is crucial for overall well-being. Avocados, with their high dietary fiber content, play a pivotal role in fostering good gut health. With approximately 6.7 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber, avocados support appetite regulation and bowel health. A fiber-rich diet is associated with reduced risks of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and bowel cancer. Furthermore, the fibers in avocados act as prebiotics, fostering a diverse and healthy gut microbiome.

Enhancing cognitive and visual function

Avocados' lutein content protects against UV light damage to the eyes, contributing to lower risks of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Recent studies indicate that a daily avocado could improve cognitive function in older adults, possibly linked to increased lutein levels in the brain. Lutein, with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, aids in protecting the brain. Older individuals who include avocados in their diet have shown significantly improved cognitive scores, particularly in memory tests.

Nourishing the skin

Avocados can also benefit the skin, thanks to their unique combination of monounsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, vitamins (including antioxidants vitamins C and E) and phenolic compounds. A recent pilot study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that women who ate an avocado daily significantly enhanced their skin’s firmness.

Avocados are more than just a creamy, delicious addition to meals— they are a nutritional powerhouse and have emerged as a true superfood with a myriad of health benefits. Embrace the avocado and savour the benefits it brings to your life.
