2/5

Which is more nutritious

Interestingly, both green peas and chickpeas are nutrient-packed, yet they offer different benefits depending on the dietary goals and nutritional needs of an individual. Here’s what makes both these legumes nutritious yet different.

Green peas

On one hand, green peas are relatively low in calories, containing about 81 calories per 100 grams, which makes these peas a lighter option as compared to the chickpeas. In fact, chickpeas have around 164 calories per 100 grams. Despite the lower calorie count, green peas provide a decent amount of protein and fiber, which support muscle maintenance and healthy digestion. What makes green peas unique is its essential vitamins, particularly vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin K. What’s more, the presence of Vitamin C in green peas makes it a better option as it is rich in antioxidants that help in protecting cells, enhances immunity, and aids iron absorption, while vitamin A supports vision and immune health. Vitamin K is important for blood clotting and bone health.

Chickpeas

On the other hand, chickpeas have a high protein and fiber content. With nearly double the protein, which is ideal for those looking to build or repair and recover tissues. The high fiber content of chickpeas helps regulate blood sugar, improve gut health, and provides satiety, which makes it beneficial for weight management. Beyond protein and fiber, chickpeas are rich in minerals such as iron and calcium. Iron is vital for producing red blood cells and preventing anemia, while calcium supports bone strength and muscle function. What's more, chickpeas are a good source of folate and pantothenic acid such as B vitamins that help convert food into energy and reduce fatigue.

4/5

Which has more fats?

While most people believe that chickpeas are low in fats you will be amazed to know that it contains more fat as compared to the green peas, which are very low in fat, this is because these fats are predominantly healthy unsaturated fats, which adds on to the overall nutrient density of chickpeas without contributing to harmful cholesterol levels.

In fact, when it comes to flavor and texture, green peas are sweet in taste and tender in texture, which makes them excellent for fresh salads, soups, curries and side dishes. Whereas, chickpeas have a nuttier taste and firmer texture, often used in heartier recipes like stews, curries, and roasted snacks.

5/5

Which is better?

Both green peas and chickpeas have different nutritional benefits. Green peas are known for their high vitamin content and lower calorie count, which helps support immunity, metabolic health, and boosts antioxidants. Chickpeas excel in protein, fibre, and mineral content that helps sustain energy and improve bone and blood health. Together, they balance lightness and strength, peas offering quick nourishment and chickpeas providing lasting fullness. Adding both to soups, salads, or curries not only enhances flavour and texture but also ensures a wider nutrient range for overall wellness. This is why it is best to mix both in the diet, especially during seasonal transitions when the body needs both light and grounding foods. Combining them also supports digestive balance, heart health, and steady energy through the day, while improving satiety, stabilising blood sugar, and promoting better absorption of essential vitamins and minerals naturally.
