Benefits of consuming lemon water

When it comes to morning drinks, warm lemon water makes for an ideal deal. Made by mixing fresh lemon juice with warm or room-temperature water, it’s known to boost hydration, aid digestion, and support detoxification. A 2014 human study on daily lemon ingestion has shown correlations with improved blood pressure levels and increased blood citric acid concentration as well. In a YouTube video, Dr Hansa Yogendra, who runs the page called The Yoga Institute shared the benefits of drinking lemon water for 14 days in the morning. And in the video, she has also mentioned other ingredients that can be added to lemon water to boost its nutritional value. Take a look.

What does an expert say?


Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford universities, states that 75% of adults are chronically dehydrated. Lemon makes water more appealing, which helps digestion, energy, and focus. He also states that one lemon offers 35 mg vitamin C, which is about 40% of our daily needs. It also boosts immunity, collagen, skin health, and iron absorption. He also informs that lemon water supports digestion, especially in low stomach acid cases. The mild acidity may stimulate gastric juices and bile flow. In his post he has also mentioned that up to 20% of people with GERD say citrus worsens the symptoms. He suggests avoiding lemon water on an empty stomach, if you notice burning or bloating. Also, lemon juice has a pH of-2 , which is very acidic. He suggests drinking it in one sitting with straw and rinse with plain water. He also clarifies that the internet overphypes it and your kidneys and liver are better detoxifying agents. Lemon water just supports hydration and digestion, not magic cleansing.

Heart-friendly


As per Dr Hansa, green tea with lemon juice could be extremely beneficial for a healthy heart. As per her video, very few people know that lemons are rich even in potassium. Potassium is also helpful in maintaining blood pressure. Also, potassium is an important mineral for nervous stimulation. One lemon contains approximately 80 milligrams of potassium, which is excellent for cell functioning of the body and patients find great relief in muscle cramps immediately.

Good for weight loss


She further states that it is excellent for weight loss. Lemon has a component called pectin, which gives you a sense of fullness. When you drink lemon water, your hunger is satisfied and thus induces weight loss. And when you add chia seeds soaked overnight to lemon water in the morning, it will keep you satisfied for a little longer, which in turn will stop you from eating heavy meals throughout the day. And that would help reduce weight.

Makes skin look younger


She states that lemon increases collagen in the body, which means your skin will have fewer wrinkles and more glow in turn. Vitamin C fights with toxins and thus prevents acne. She even shared a simple juice drink for skin. In one cup of water, simply add half a cup of beetroot, carrot and tomato, four slices of cucumber and half lemon juice and all this you blend it. This would be a wonderful juice. Try to include this juice in your routine and you will see the results of acne free and glowing skin.

Boost immunity


It is rich in vitamin C which boosts immunity. She adds, "Vitamin C produces more white blood cells and produces antibodies that can kill bacterial or viral infection. Thus, it is a great immunity booster. To enhance the benefit of lemon water, have it in the form of lemon ginger shot, she recommends. Add ginger pieces and lemon juice in the blender with little water and then add a pinch of turmeric powder. Blend it and sieve it through fine mesh. Here your shot is ready. You can add natural sweetener like honey if you want to taste it better. One shot in the morning is more than sufficient. You can store the shot for one week in a refrigerator, she adds in the video.

Alkalize the body


Lemon is acidic in nature, but after consumption, after it passes through the digestive processes, then it gets converted into alkaline compounds. And this is how it maintains the pH of the body. In the video, she mentioned how to make alkaline water with lemon. Take half a pitcher of room temperature water and add slices of one lemon to it with a pinch of salt. Keep yourself hydrated with this water, she recommends. Sipping this alkaline water detoxifies the whole body. But always remember, do not overdo it. Some acidity is also necessary for normal functioning of the body, she warns.

Removes kidney stones

As per Dr Hansa, intake of lemon water can stop the formation of kidney stones. Citrate in lemon combines with calcium and it blocks the production of stones. The best influence on kidney stones is an intake of lemonade. No other recipe is going to work better than this pure lemonade, she claims. Drink around two glasses of lemonade per day to break the kidney stones, she concludes.
