Yellow turmeric

Both the variety of turmerics hail from the same family. However, turmeric is commonly yellow in colour, and this one variety is scientifically known as Curcuma longa. The yellow turmeric is known for its bright golden color and warm, earthy flavor with a slight bitterness. It is known globally for its potent health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties, which makes turmeric a superfood food for boosting health and wellness naturally. This is majorly because of a compound called Curcumin, which is a potent antioxidant, which helps in boosting metabolism, immunity, joint health and improve skin condition.

Black turmeric

Black turmeric also known as Curcuma Caesia has a distinctive dark blue-black or purplish hue, this rhizome has a stronger, pungent, and slightly bitter taste. This unique black turmeric contains unique compounds like tannins, elemene, and bornyl acetate, which contribute to its powerful medicinal properties. Traditionally, black turmeric was used in making Ayurvedic and herbal medicine for pain relief, respiratory issues, digestive health, and boosting energy levels. Interestingly, the curcumin content in this turmeric is much lower than that of yellow turmeric, but it is compensated with other bioactive compounds that have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

Which is more healthy?


Yellow turmeric is widely used for its high antioxidant properties that helps combat chronic inflammation, improves skin health, and helps in general wellbeing. On the other hand, black turmeric has a stronger emphasis on targeted pain relief, anti-inflammatory effects, and respiratory support, making it a powerful herb for specific health concerns such as arthritis and asthma.

There’s no denying that yellow turmeric is a kitchen staple used in cooking, curries, curries, sabzis, smoothies, teas, and skin treatments due to its pleasant flavor and bright color.
