History of cookies

When it comes to cookies, they are often associated with a blend of flour, butter, sugar, and sometimes spices. But did you know the world of cookies is way beyond. As per legends, the history of cookies dates back to the 7th century in Persia and during those days, cookies were actually simple test cakes, where a small portion of cake mixture was baked to check oven temperature. And as per historians, the word cookie comes from the Dutch “koekje,” meaning “little cake,”. Recently, Taste Atlas released a list of Top 100 Cookies in the world. Here are the top 10 that every cookie lover should try to understand the world of cookies.

These are delicious semolina cookies that are traditionally flavored with honey, orange zest, cinnamon and other spices, olive oil, and cognac. They are doused in honey syrup, then sprinkled with ground walnuts, which adds crunch to these cookies.

These are flourless cookies, made with almonds, eggs, sugar, and a flavoring of orange flower water. After baking, these cookies are tossed in powdered sugar in order to be completely coated and are served with tea or coffee on the side.

These are sandwich cookies that consist of two round, crumbly sweet cookies with a dulce de leche or milk jam stuffing between them. The combination is then coated with a layer of chocolate or sprinkled with confectioners' sugar.

These are Dutch cookies that consist of a very thin layer of syrup, sugar, butter, and cinnamon that is sandwiched between two thin wafers. It is said that these cookies were invented in the late 18th century in the city of Gouda.

These cookies come with an intense fragrance of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger, and as per experts, they were traditionally baked on the eve of St Nicholas Day, celebrated on December 5 and December 6.

These cookies are very popular and are made with wheat flour, eggs, sugar, honey, jam, cocoa and gingerbread mixture, including cloves, coriander, cinnamon, allspice and aniseed.

Canestrelli, Italy


These cookies are very popular, so much that they are even recognized as a traditional agricultural product of the region. Local varieties of the recipe also exist, such as canestrelli di Santo Stefano D'Aveto, Acquasanta, or Torriglia, where the basic dough is enriched with ground almonds, lemon zest, orange blossom water, or a topping of granulated sugar before baking.
