Importance of cholesterol and how to keep it under control

It often happens that when we hear the word cholesterol, we immediately link that word with something negative. But, did you know that cholesterol is a necessary component which is produced in our liver. Cholesterol is very important for several metabolic activities in the body, including cell formation, hormone and bile production. It is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body needs to build cells, make hormones, and aid digestion. While your liver produces enough cholesterol for these functions, extra cholesterol from foods—especially fried items, processed meats, and high-fat dairy—can raise your level. When “bad” LDL cholesterol becomes too high, it can stick to artery walls and form plaques, narrowing blood vessels and increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. On the other hand, “good” HDL cholesterol helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream and protects your heart. Dr Hansa Yogendra, who runs the page called The Yoga Institute on YouTube discussed about cholesterol in a video and mentioned that there are good cholesterol, also called as low density lipoprotein. The problem arises when we start eating food containing bad cholesterol. These are foods that are high in saturated and trans fat. Non-vegetarian food also increases cholesterol level. All of these increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke. Other factors which include one genetics, that is hereditary tendency, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes. In the video, she talked about a special drink, really beneficial for people suffering from high cholesterol. Also, the Journal of the American Heart Association has highlighted that plant-based diets can reduce LDL cholesterol by approximately 10% and apolipoprotein B by 14%, suggesting a substantial impact on heart health.
