Period Feast by Sachi Saheli NGO

A few days ago when Swami Krushnaswarup Dasji claimed that according to spiritual texts a menstruating woman who cooks food for her husband will certainly be reborn as a ‘kutri’ (bitch), there was an uproar in social media and a massive backlash. As a constructive response to the comment, a Delhi-based NGO recently organized a ‘Period Feast’ or ‘Mahavari Mahabhoj’ to challenge the stigma. The lunch organized to uphold women’s menstrual dignity was attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. (Image: twitter/Sachi Saheli)

Sachi Saheli's Period Feast

As an answer to the derogatory comment, a Delhi-based NGO named ‘Sachhi Saheli’ organized a ‘Period Feast’ or ‘Mahavari Mahabhoj’ recently, where 28 menstruating women cooked and served food to over 300 attendees. (Image: twitter/SachiSaheli)

Proud menstruating women

While preparing the food, women wore aprons that said “I am a proud menstruating woman” and a street play was also performed to dispel superstitions associated with periods. (Image: twitter/SachiSaheli)

What Manish Sisodia said?

As the guest of honour, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said, "In today’s scientific day and age, there is nothing pure or impure about menstruation, it is a natural biological process that should be taken as it is.” (Image: twitter/SachiSaheli)

Students' take

A menstruating student, who volunteered to cook for the event said that this feast is an answer to all the people who believe that menstruating women will be born as dogs, if they prepare food during their period days. In a country like India, we have no place for such superstitions. (Image: twitter/SachiSaheli)

Bottomline

Food connects people and makes our existence a tasteful experience and such comments can never be in good spirit. Don't you think that food is meant to be just celebrated than being a slice of agenda? (Image: twitter/SachiSaheli)
