Coffee adulteration test

We always read about the health benefits and side effects of drinking coffee. According to experts, controlled consumption of coffee is good for the body. But, the most important question is, whether the coffee powder is safe for consumption or not? Yes, you read it is right. The practice of food adulteration has not left coffee powder aloof. These days, market players add chicory powder to enhance the texture and experience of coffee. Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) shared a quick text to check coffee powder adulteration with chicory powder. ​What is chicory and is it safe?

It is a perennial herbaceous plant of the daisy family and its leaves, root, and flowers are edible. As per experts, the root of chicory has a mild laxative effect. The leaves are often used in soups and salad and are also used as a cooking spice, and to enhance the flavour. As per experts, chicory is not safe for pregnant women and breastfeeding women. Also if you are allergic to chicory, you should avoid such adulterated coffee. It can stimulate the production of bile, and can be problematic for people with gallstones. (Image: istock)

How to do coffee adulteration test

1. Take a glass of water.

2. Add a teaspoon of coffee powder in the glass.

3. The unadulterated coffee will float on the surface and will gradually dissolve.

4. The adulterated coffee will float on the surface of the water with relatively faster dissolution. (Image: istock)
