Include these winter foods in your diet to keep illnesses at bay

Wintertime problems

With winter in full swing, accentuated by the casual spells of rain, it has become increasingly chilly, and the low temperature gives rise to a number of pests in the form of microorganisms. Bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens cause many unpleasant conditions that end up ruining the beginning of the season. Colder conditions are conducive to microbial growth, and before you know it, you’d have succumbed to an infection. If not microbes, then the temperature itself is enough to trigger many problems. Since prevention is better than cure, including certain foods in your diet can prevent the risk of conditions. Here are some winter foods that keep wintertime conditions at bay.

​Turnip for breathing problems

Lower temperatures make it tougher to breathe, especially if you have asthma, congestion, or other breathing problems. Turnips maintain the health of lungs, reducing inflammation and boosting its functionality. This promotes better and easier breathing.

​Spinach for joint pain

The cold weather can be your worst enemy when it comes to joint health, more so if you suffer from arthritis. Spinach contains antioxidants and plant compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce pain in the joints.

​Sarson to maintain body temperature

Sarson or mustard is obtained from the mustard plant, and is a popular North Indian wintertime ingredient. It has thermogenic properties which help in maintaining body temperature and in keeping the body warm.

​Radish for dry skin

Radish is an excellent source of zinc and phosphorus, minerals that boost skin health and treat conditions like acne and dryness. Moreover, radishes contain a lot of water, which keeps the skin hydrated.

Green garlic for flu

Garlic that is harvested early and still has leaves attached is called green garlic. Green garlic improves blood flow and circulation throughout the body, which boosts immunity so that the body can fight off infections like the flu caused by the influenza virus.

The antimicrobial properties of fenugreek help in getting rid of throat irritants like bacteria and viruses while its anti-inflammatory properties reduce throat inflammation.
