This popular dish has beaten other popular GI dishes such as Rasgulla, Ratlami Sev and Bikaneri Bhujiya.

These awards are based on public opinion and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry selected the dish based on a voting, that was done between August 2 and October 9 to select the dish. The participants who voted for these awards were both from India and abroad and the majority of them voted for Hyderabadi Haleem.

Apparently, it was in 2010 that Hyderabadi Haleem was awarded the GI status and it expired in 2019. Later, the registrar of Geographical Indicator (GI) renewed the tag for the dish for 10 years.
