How to use chopsticks: Step-by-step guide with pictures

Chopsticks may look tricky at first, but they’re really just about balance and a bit of practice. Used across East Asia for centuries, these slim sticks turn eating into something graceful once you get the hang of them. The key is simple: one stick stays steady, the other moves like a pencil. With a few easy steps, anyone can learn to pick up sushi, noodles, or even rice without fumbling. Scroll down to learn how.

2/9

Step 1 - Relax your hand

Hold out your dominant hand as if you’re about to shake someone’s hand. Keep your fingers loose and relaxed; stiffness will only make it harder.

3/9

Step 2 - Position the bottom stick

Place the first chopstick so that the thicker end rests gently in the crook between your thumb and index finger, while the other end rests on your ring finger. This stick is your anchor; it doesn’t have to move much.

4/9

Step 3 - Hold the top stick like a pencil

Now take the second chopstick and hold it between your thumb, index, and middle finger just like a pencil. This is the one that does the moving.

5/9

Step 4 - Align the tips

Check that the tips of both sticks line up neatly. If they’re uneven, gripping food will be frustrating.

6/9

Step 5 - Practice opening and closing

Without any food yet, move the top stick up and down while keeping the bottom one steady. Practice pinching the air until the movement feels smooth and controlled.

7/9

Step 6 - Start with bigger bites

Test your grip on larger items first - chunks of vegetables, sushi, or tofu are ideal. Bring the sticks around the piece, squeeze gently, and lift. Don’t worry if it slips; that’s part of learning as well.

8/9

Step 7 - Move on to noodles and rice

Once comfortable, try noodles (lift with a gentle scooping motion) and rice (pinch small clumps or push it onto a spoon if needed). With practice, even tricky foods will feel easy.

9/9

Practice tips

1. Use rubber bands or training chopsticks if you’re new - they guide your fingers into position.

2. Try picking up small items like peanuts or beans at home to improve control.

3. Keep sessions short; five minutes of practice each day is better than struggling at one meal.

Chopsticks aren’t just tools - they’re part of table culture. Don’t point with them, stab your food, or stick them upright in a bowl of rice (it resembles funeral rituals). When you’re done, rest them neatly on the table or a chopstick rest.
