How to make South Indian Chicken Chettinad Curry at home

Chicken Chettinad Curry Recipe

Chicken Chettinad or Chettinad chicken is a classic chicken preparation of Chettinad cuisine in Kerala. Made with a special Chettinad Masala, this main course dish is best served with rice. Scroll down to read the recipe.

Ingredients required

500 gms chicken, 2 tbsp oil, 1 cup onion, 6-8 curry leaves, 1 cup tomato, 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp chilli powder, 1 tbsp curd, 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste, salt to taste. For Chettinad masala: 1 tbsp poppy seeds, 1/2 cup coconut, 1 tbsp coriander seeds, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp peppercorn, 4-6 dry red chilli, 2 green cardamom, 2 cloves and 1 cinnamon stick

Step 1


Dry roast the Chettinad spices and blend to a fine paste using enough water.

Wash and clean the chicken pieces and set aside.

Marinate the chicken pieces using turmeric chilli powder, curd, salt, and ginger garlic paste. Set aside for 10 mins.

Heat oil in a kadhai and add bay leaf, curry leaves, and onion. Sauté for 30 seconds.

Add chicken pieces and fry for 4-6 mins.

Add tomato, turmeric powder, salt, chilli powder and cook til the oil begins to separate.

Add the Chettinad masala and cook for another 5 mins.

Add water and cook for 7-8 minutes and serve hot with a garnish of coriander leaves.
