Holi 2022: A single piece of this Mirchi Gujiya costs Rs 1200, we tell you why

We have heard about Rajasthani Mirchi Halwa, but, have you ever heard of Mirchi Gujiya? Yes, you read it right, we are talking about Mirchi Gujiya aka Bahubali Gujiya 2.0 of Lucknow’s Chhapan Bhog. This 8-inch gujiya is loaded with green chilli and nuts and is priced at Rs 1200 per piece. Read below to know more about it.

Around the festival of Holi, this sweet shop of Lucknow has been organizing a Gujiya contest for the last two years. In 2021, they made ‘BahuBali Gujiya’ which weighed 1.5 kg and measured 14 inches. This year, they have walked a step ahead and introduced Mirchi Gujiya. As the name suggests, it’s a deep-fried gujiya filled with green chilli. According to Kshitij Gupta, co-owner, Chhappan Bhog, “This gujiya is filled with green chilli, khoya, kishmish, kesar, cashew, and almonds.” He adds, “All the stuffing is first soaked in saffron sugar water, which helps decrease the spiciness of green chillies.”

Kshitij believes that in the present time, people are open for fruitful experimentation and that’s the reason he decided to give gujiya a spicy twist. He affirms, “The idea came from Rajasthani Mirchi Halwa, and I wanted to give it a try in the form of gujiya too. After a couple of attempts, we got it right and I think the subtleness of de-seeded green chilli blended with nuts and khoya makes it an interesting treat for those who wish to avoid too much sweetness this Holi."

While in 2021, the size of the gujiya was 14 inches, this year they have reduced it to 8 inches. Explaining the reason, Kshitij says, “After last year's competition, we took feedback from people and realized that food lovers are keen to explore more in terms of flavour than the size, hence we decided to reduce the size and play around the flavours.”

They recently organized 3-day gujiya contest called "The Great Gujiya Challenge”, where Hardayal Mauryaji, the chaat king of India was also present and gujiya lovers were seen enjoying the spicy twist.
