Green Chana, Hara Chana or Choliya is a winter delicacy. The soft green gram is a light, fresh seasonal food that is available only for 2-3 months during winter. Often consumed raw or cooked slightly, this fresh harvest of chana is considered healthy and full of nutrition. This freshly harvested gram finds place in several seasonal rituals and festivals like Neman in Bihar, Makar Sankranti across India and Lohri in Punjab and Haryana. So, is Green Chana healthier than its aged, dried counterpart?
Choliya is lighter and fresher because it is harvested young and has more moisture, slightly lower calories and a fresher, grassy flavour that works well in bhel, stir-fries and light curries. It has more water content and lesser amount of calories and offers complex carbs and fibre, which help slow sugar release and keep you full for longer. Dietitians note that green chana provides vitamin C, B vitamins and antioxidants that support immunity when eaten in season.
Black Chana on the other hand is one superfood which is available year round and is looked upon as one of the best sources of clean protein. It is however higher in carbs than green chana but packs double the amount of protein. It keeps you full, helps control appetite and supports healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It has higher levels of iron, calcium and potassium which make it a reliable source of nutrition for bone strength and blood pressure balance. Soaked or lightly cooked Kala chana is often recommended in weight-loss diets because it is filling but still nutrient dense.

Which is better for you? Both are healthy; the “better” choice depends on your goal.
For more protein and minerals per 100 g, choose black chana (kala chana).
For a lighter, fresher, seasonal option, choose green chana, especially in winter, for snacks, chaats and quick sabzis.
For diabetes and stable energy: Both are good because of their fibre and low glycaemic nature, but kala chana’s higher fibre makes it slightly more powerful for blood sugar control.
