How these foods were named after people

Every food or dish has a story that speaks of its invention, discovery, or existence. And these stories speak volumes of the way a dish comes into existence and why it tastes or looks a certain way. And for food lovers, such stories are a testament to how a dish evolves and takes its shape in the world of gastronomy. Whether it's the story of Caesar salad and how the fewer supplies in the kitchen resulted in its innovation or how the comfort of enjoying meat between bread by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, resulted in the form of the world-famous sandwich, each story has its own charm that only a foodie can associate with. Let us explore some of those stories of how foods were named after people in history.

2/6

Margherita Pizza

Named After: Queen Margherita (1851–1926)
As per food experts, when Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 one of the most famous pizza-makers in the area, Raffaele Esposito, created a pizza for her. It is said that he used basil, mozzarella and tomato to represent the colours of the Italian flag and the Queen loved it so much that he named it after her.

3/6

Pavlova

Named after: Anna Pavlova (1881–1931)
It is a meringue-based dessert named after the famous Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. It is said that this dessert topped with cream and fruit, was created in her honor during her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. While both the countries still debate on who invented it first, foodies agree that it’s as light and graceful as Pavlova’s dance.

4/6

Sandwich

Named After: John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718–1792).
It is said that Earl was an avid gambler and always asked for meat to be served between slices of bread so that his game was not disturbed. Others started noticing the same and started asking for "the same as Sandwich" and that's how the same got stuck.

5/6

Caesar Salad

Named after: Caesar Cardini

It is said that Caesar Cardini is an Italian-American restaurateur, who invented the dish and was invented in Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1920s. It is said that he created it on a busy Fourth of July night when kitchen supplies were low, tossing together romaine, eggs, Parmesan, croutons, and his signature dressing.

6/6

Nachos

Named After: Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya

It is said that in 1943, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya invented the dish when he whipped up a quick snack of tortilla chips, cheese, and jalapeños for visiting guests. They loved it, and soon “Nacho’s Special” turned into the world-famous nachos.
