Chicken is not infected by Coronavirus

The government of India released a letter saying that poultry is safe to consume as it is not infected by the Coronavirus. The broiler chicken breed was claimed to be infected by the ongoing virus. This claim turned out to be a hoax and the commissioner of the Animal Husbandry denied all claims in a letter.

The false claim

It was claimed in the southern part of India that farm bred chicken which is also called broiler chicken is possibly infected by the deadly coronavirus. However, the scientists have established it that the virus is spread by human to human contact. Post tests, The Union Ministry of Animal Husbandry clarified on Monday that the chicken breed was not affected by the virus and all types of poultryin the country was safe. The current outbreak of the virus has claimed over 800 lives in China and is known to spread with human contact.

What the commissioner of the Animal Husbandry had to say?

The commissioner of the Animal Husbandry, Praveen Malik replied to Vijay Sardana, the Advisor of the Poultry Federation of India that poultry was in no way involved in the spread of the virus anywhere, globally.

The source of the false information

This confirmation from the government was initiated after the ongoing doubts about broiler chicken being affected by 2019 nCoV on social media went viral. Commissioner Malik responded to the issue after receiving an e-mail from Sardana regarding the rumours.

The nCoV is capable of causing the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
