Can walnuts go bad? What is the right way to consume walnuts in summers

There’s no denying that walnuts are one of the most nutritious nuts that are great for brain development, heart health, digestion and overall immunity. Walnuts are naturally loaded with healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants, and much like any other natural food, walnuts too can go bad if not stored properly. Here’s everything you need to know about the shelf life of walnuts, their nutritional benefits, and the best ways to consume them during the summer months.

2/5

Do walnuts go bad?

Yes, walnuts can go bad. Due to their high oil content, they are prone to rancidity when exposed to heat, light, and moisture. Fresh walnuts should have a mildly nutty aroma and a crisp texture. If they smell like paint or have a bitter taste, it’s a sign they have gone rancid. To prolong their shelf life, it is best to store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer, where they can last up to a year.

3/5

Nutrients in Walnuts

Walnuts are a powerhouse of nutrients. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants. Consuming walnuts regularly is linked to improved heart health, reduced inflammation, and better brain function. Just a handful (about 28 grams) provides 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and a good dose of healthy fats that are essential for overall well-being.

The Right Way to Consume Walnuts in Summers

During the summer months, it’s important to consume walnuts in a way that helps cool the body. Soaking walnuts overnight and consuming them the next morning is ideal. Soaking reduces their heat-producing properties, making them easier to digest while enhancing nutrient absorption. You can also add soaked walnuts to smoothies, salads, or yogurt bowls for a refreshing twist.

Creative Ways to Include Walnuts in Your Summer Diet

In addition to soaking, walnuts can be added to summer-friendly dishes. Toss them into fresh green salads, blend them into smoothie bowls, or use them as a crunchy topping for chilled desserts. Their natural crunch and nutty flavor pair well with fruits like apples, berries, and even citrus, adding both texture and nutrition.

I love walnuts. My favorite breakfast is oatmeal made with soy milk, fruit, chia seeds, and walnuts. Walnuts are not a complete protein in terms of essential amino acids for muscle growth. They must be combined with other protein to be complete.
