Indians love tea, be it the kadak chai from the tapri or the soothing green tea or an aromatic sleeping tea, a warm cuppa of tea has different meanings for everyone. For some it is just a drink to begin or unwind the day and for others it is an experience. But what if we reveal that most of the packaged tea that people consume on a daily basis is laced with exhausted leaves or artificial colors; Disappointing right! Here are some simple steps to check whether the tea you blindly rely on is mixed with artificial colours, filers or exhausted leaves.
Is tea really adulterated?
Tea adulteration is common, but it is hard to identify the addition of filers and colours in packaged tea. Here are some easy tips by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India) that can help in identifying the addition of colours and mixed leaves in tea.
How to check it at home?
To begin with take a filter paper
Spread out the tea leaves on the paper filter and add a few drops of water.
Remove the tea leaves from the paper and wash it under running water.
If there are brown and dark shaded stains on the paper, then tea is adulterated. If there are light stains or no stains, then the tea leaves are pure and no colours or additives are present in it .
