‘Mama’s Biscuits’ by 77-year-old grandma

The adorable tutorial video of a 77-year-old woman making ‘Mama Biscuits’ went viral on Facebook as she made 8 types of biscuits using an old handwritten recipe, presumably passed on from her mother.

Heirloom recipes hold an innate charm, not just for their quintessential taste, but also sometimes for the numerous benefits they offer and also because they underline the fact that simplicity is the best policy when it comes to creating a timeless recipe.

The Story Behind the Viral Video

The story unfolded in Georgia when a woman decided to make biscuits at home and wanted them to be according to her grandmother’s authentic recipe. Since she did not have the original recipe written down, she contacted a friend of her grandmother, Pat Wilbanks, for help.

Turns out, Pat had an original recipe for homemade ‘Mama’s Biscuits’ written down and she chose to make a ‘tutorial video’ so that her friend’s granddaughter can learn how to make them. However, her grandson who shot the video for her did the whole world a favour by uploading it to Facebook. And the video did just what was expected- it went viral.

People loved the Recipe!

Her video won a lot of love from her viewers on Facebook. Turns out, what happened with Pat’s friend’s granddaughter also happens with a lot of people. Many of her viewers remembered their grandmothers and the recipes lost in time. One commented, “My grand taught me a similar method but no measuring cup or spoon using the same ingredients. I still do her method today. I love your video.” Another said, “Thank you miss Patsy! Reminds me of my grandma! I'm 52 and she's been gone for over 20 years. Your recipe is like hers. I'll go make me some! Again thank you, Mam!!” The video struck a chord of nostalgia with people. One thankful user commented, “Awesome thank you. My granny made hers with her hands, too messy for me thank you. Love this.”

How did she make the biscuits?

The biscuits were made of white flour, melted butter, Crisco and buttermilk and involved mixing the ingredients except for the butter in a bowl and then kneading it until smooth and not sticky. Now, she laid out the kneaded dough in a thick layer and cut out the biscuits. She then put them on a greased baking tray, covered them with melted butter and baked at 375 degrees F for 13 minutes. After that, she broiled the biscuits for 2 to 3 minutes. One user said, “Broil the biscuits for 3 minutes - and that's the secret no one ever shares.”
