3 mistakes to avoid while having curd as per Ayurveda

The right way to eat curd

Curd or yogurt is rich in probiotics; it supports gut health, aids digestion, and boosts the body’s immunity. Curd is also a nutritious source of calcium, protein, and vitamin B12, making it beneficial for bone strength and muscle repair. It has a natural cooling effect on the body, which is especially helpful during hot weather. But if we look at Ayurveda, it is considered to be heavy, sour, and heat-producing in nature, which means it can increase Pitta and Kapha doshas if taken improperly. Hence, Ayurveda advises consuming curd in moderation, ideally during the daytime and never at night, as it may lead to mucus formation, indigestion, or sluggishness. Ayurveda also suggests avoiding curd with certain types of foods and in certain situations. In a recent video on Instagram, Dimple Jangda, a health and wellness expert, explained 3 mistakes to avoid while having curd as per Ayurveda. Scroll down to read about it.

Consuming yogurt during acid reflux or hyperacidity

According to Dimple, many people mistakenly believe that yogurt can help soothe a burning sensation caused by hyperacidity or acid reflux. However, yogurt is considered one of the heaviest foods in Ayurveda. Its sour and fermented nature can exacerbate acidity when it interacts with your body heat. In her post she says, "Yogurt can increase body temperature and fermentation in the gut, leading to heightened acidity and discomfort. Instead of alleviating symptoms, yogurt may worsen them." She suggests, "If you’re experiencing these symptoms, opt for buttermilk instead. Buttermilk is lighter and has cooling properties that can help soothe the digestive system."

3/4

Mixing yogurt with milk

In the video, Dimple has explained that these two dairy products can react negatively in the digestive system, leading to blockages and various health issues such as tummy infections and skin disorders. She explains, "Mixing yogurt and milk can create a heavy combination that is difficult to digest, potentially leading to the formation of toxins (Aama) in the body. This combination may also aggravate conditions like eczema or other skin issues." She advises to enjoy yogurt on its own or with compatible foods such as honey or split green gram (moong dal).

4/4

Combining yogurt with incompatible foods

According to her post, mixing yogurt with leafy greens, sour fruits (like citrus), melons, fish, and starchy foods (such as bananas) can create toxic combinations that may lead to skin diseases or digestive issues. She adds, "Incompatible combinations can disrupt digestion and lead to increased mucus production, resulting in conditions like allergies or skin irritations. These combinations may also dampen your digestive fire (Agni), leading to further health complications."
