10 foods that prevent bloating and gas

It is that time of the year, when overeating and delightful indulgences are some of the most common things in this season. Interestingly, as much as we love enjoying delicious delicacies in winters, it is also the time when excessive bloating, gas and discomfort are some of the most common things that affect metabolic health. However, most people pop up digestive pills and syrups to fix indigestion and bloating, but most of these things are not sustainable in the long run. Well, if you too have been struggling with it, then we have got your back with some of the most natural foods that can help in relieving bloating and gas.

2/10

Lemon

There’s no denying that lemon is great for metabolic health, and helps prevent digestive discomforts like bloating and gas with its digestion stimulating digestive enzymes which help reduce constipation, and flush excess sodium for less gas buildup. Lemon is also loaded with the goodness of vitamin C and citric acid, which when consumed as lemon water promotes hydration and gut motility, easing water retention.

According to a study published in 2022 Glycemic response, satiety, gastric secretions and emptying after bread consumption with water, tea or lemon juice: looked at the effects of drinking lemon juice and other beverages alongside eating bread. It found that lemon helped the stomach to produce more digestive juices and empty faster. This can improve digestion and help reduce bloating.

3/10

Ginger

Drinking ginger tea can help in healing bloating, gas and digestive health. This is because of the presence of a simple enzyme known as Zingibain, this is basically a powerful cysteine protease (protein-digesting enzyme) that breaks down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids, improving nutrient absorption in the gut, tenderizing meat, and even curdling milk. Ginger's Zingibain enzyme digests proteins, while gingerols reduce inflammation and nausea-linked gas. It speeds gastric emptying. Ginger helps reduce gastrointestinal pain and improved digestion, combating bloating.

4/10

Turmeric

Another common kitchen essential is turmeric, which is naturally loaded with Curcumin, which is an active compound that helps in relieving bloating and gas, when consumed as a tea. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties that help in soothing gut irritation and reducing gas from poor digestion. It enhances bile production to break down fats, preventing fermentation that causes bloating. Apart from that curcumin's efficacy helps in lowering IBS-related bloating and abdominal discomfort.

5/10

Peppermint

Drinking peppermint tea or water helps in relaxing gut health and also helps smoothen muscles via menthol, removing trapped gas and easing spasms that cause bloating. It is also effective for IBS, and addition of this tea or peppermint water helps in reducing abdominal pain and bloating significantly.

6/10

Saunf

Drinking fennel tea or water or simply raw saunf helps in releasing carminative compounds that relax intestinal and gut muscles, expel gas, and prevent bloating. Traditionally used post-meal, it aids motility.

7/10

Cucumber

This common veggie is Cucumber, which has around 95% water and fiber, which helps in naturally hydrating the gut while flushing sodium to curb water retention and gas. Its mild diuretic effect eases distension. Moreover, eating cucumber helps in reducing bloating by supporting regularity and reducing excess fluid.

8/10

Pineapple

Consuming cold pineapple juice or pineapple detox water can also help in reducing gas and bloating naturally. This is because pineapple contains bromelain enzyme that breaks down proteins, reducing indigestion, gas, and ensures post-meal fullness. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe gut spasms.

9/10

Chia seeds

Another popular food is chia seeds that forms a gel with water, which adds soluble fiber of about 10g per 28g fiber, which helps in softens the stool, reduces gas, and supports regularity without fermentation. They balance gut bacteria for less bloating. Trials show chia aids digestion in those prone to IBS-like symptoms.

10/10

Papaya

This common fruit is also great for digestive health, as the papain enzyme in papaya helps in digesting proteins, preventing fermentation and gas in the gut. Fiber and antioxidants support regularity. A small 100 gram serving post-protein meal helps reduce bloating and gas.
