Designer Krishna Mehta brought alive the classic retro style as she showcased a casual, yet ‘high-energy’ collection, on the second day of Van Heusen India Mens Week 2011.Theme: Paying tribute to the yesteryear heroes of Hindi cinema, Mehta presented an assortment of Raj Kapoor’s signature rolled-up pants, Dev Anand’s classic hats, and Shammi Kapoor’s exuberance on the ramp.
The show commenced with a lot of cheering by the audience as model Hrishant Goswami took to the ramp from among the audience. And soon a medley of the old classic numbers ‘Yahoo’ and ‘Gata Rahe Mera Dil’ playing in the backdrop engaged the packed house into a Retro disposition.
Talking about her collection post-show, Krishna said, “It was a tribute to three great yesteryear actors – Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand. I have combined three quarter pants of Raj Kapoor Sahab, hats of Dev Anand Ji and the style of Shammi Ji.”
Collection and detailing: The collection mainly comprised bandhgalas, achkans and short jackets teamed with torn jeans and folded trousers, in tones of beige and black blended with veritable shades of orange, red and blue. “I wanted to show that Indian kurtas or achkans can be worn with pants or jeans too. The idea was to show the youth that they can nicely blend their past with present and still look stylish,” said Krishna.
Fabric and embellishments: Mehta, who justly claims to be a craft-based designer, said she always wants to show the crafts of India in her garments. She used natural Indian fabrics like silk, cotton and linen, with a lot of surface embroidery, tie-dye and embellishments in this conventional yet modern line, which was about “mixing a lot of basics with beautifully cut” designs.
Renowned designer Leena Singh could be seen gracing the front row during Mehta’s show.
