After the Taj Mahal pendant controversy, Margot Robbie turns to Charlotte Brontë’s Victorian bracelet

Hollywood’s ‘Barbie’, Margot Robbie, knows how influential fashion can be. Using it to promote her films, she’s now moving like an artist for her upcoming release, ‘Wuthering Heights’, giving us looks that should be installed in a museum. Picking absolutely iconic archival pieces of renowned designers, she’s undoubtedly conjuring the film’s feel.

Proving this promotional run is a lightning rod for controversy, she now has her eyes on a Victorian-era bracelet that’s around 175 years old - or, as close as one can get to it. For the London premiere of her film, Margot wore a replica of Charlotte Brontë’s bracelet, which is a piece of Victorian mourning jewellery.

Charlotte Brontë was a renowned 19th-century English poet and novelist best known for her masterpiece 'Jane Eyre', published in 1847. She was the elder sister of the famous Brontë sisters, including Emily and Anne.

Charlotte wore the bracelet all the time, which features a sparkling amethyst in the centre, with a strap around which is intertwined hair of her late sisters Emile and Anne. This may sound a little odd to us, but back in the Victorian era, jewellery made from the hair of deceased relatives was a common thing amongst the upper and middle classes.



Wrapping the original piece around her hands would have stirred more controversy, as this piece is a personal mourning jewellery piece, which means a great deal to the English people. The replica was created by Haworth-based Wyedean Weaving. She matched it with a corseted full-length see-through gown and complemented it with Jessica McCormack’s drop-down earrings and a shining choker necklace.

But why does her choice of ensembles and accessories cause all this noise?



The 35-year-old actress recently walked the red carpet for her film’s promotions wearing the Rs 73 crore Taj Mahal Necklace from Cartier. During her media interaction, she straightaway called it Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace. It is actually the Taj Mahal diamond on the pendant, which has a lot of romantic and rich Indian history attached to it.

Well, then came much disagreement about whether the necklace originated in Turkey or in India, but everyone agreed that it could not be directly attributed to the late American actress Elizabeth Taylor. Many called her out for ‘whitewashing’ the piece and for how the West has rebranded many cultural artefacts, stripping them of their very origin.

Well, between her Brontë-inspired bracelet and all the vintage Boucheron, we’re in absolute awe of her iconic ensemble choices, which surely create a blurred relation with her character Cathy in ‘Wuthering Heights’, making method dressing look absolutely mesmerising.
