Decades later, Princess Diana joins the Grévin Wax Museum

The Grévin Wax Museum in Paris unveiled a new star attraction on Thursday, and it was none other than the People's Princess - Diana. Depicted in her popular black cocktail dress, also known as the ‘Revenge Dress’, she instantly became the star of the museum, with her Parisian fans and followers already flocking in through the doors just to see one look of Princess Di. This installation comes decades after her tragic death in the city.

Why is the installation making the rounds online?

The Grévin Museum is one of Europe’s oldest wax museums and is similar to Madame Tussauds in London. The museum already has models of King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II. However, Diana’s notable absence raised serious questions, despite her tragic association with the city of love. Let us remind you that she passed away tragically in a car crash in Paris in August 1997. Her wax statue is displayed under the museum’s dome alongside great fashion figures like Jean Paul Gaultier and Chantal Thomass. The arena also has the late French Queen Marie-Antoinette’s wax statue as well, who was beheaded in 1793.

Decked up in the mischievous ‘Revenge Dress’

What made the moment more happening was that Diana’s statue was decked out in the popular ‘Revenge Dress’, which had a bitter story around it and quickly gained the attention of her fans online. The ‘revenge dress’ featured a knee-length, figure-hugging cocktail dress, crafted from luxurious sheer detailing, and came with an off-shoulder look, with a statement calf-length trail falling from the front. She teamed the look with a statement pearl-laden choker, matching studs, chic black stockings, and stunning black heels.

Why is it called the ‘Revenge Dress’?

The ‘Revenge Dress’ to date holds an important name in the history of fashion, as this Christina Stambolian design was not just any other piece of clothing, but it stood as an armour of confidence and grace for Princess Diana. She wore this dress to a Serpentine Gallery event in London in 1994, where, right before her appearance, King Charles III, at the time Prince Charles, accepted his unfaithful relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. However, Diana, with this iconic fit, made such a great impact and projected an image where she was seen giving a defiant statement against him.

Where is the original ‘Revenge Dress'?

The original ‘Revenge Dress’ is on display at the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge, County Kildare, in Ireland. This is a part of the Newbridge Silverware company. It was displayed in their 2017 exhibition titled ‘Diana: A Fashion Legacy’. The dress belongs to a Scottish couple, Graeme Mackenzie, who bought it at an auction in 1997. Now, the replica with Diana wearing it lies at the Grevin Wax Museum. The museum finally decided to unveil the figure to honour Diana, despite initially being hesitant to exploit her tragedy, but her fans have burst into joy and are already expressing their emotions online.
