At a time when there were a few fresh faces in modelling, designer
Madhu Jain says she was lucky to find someone like Simar Dugal when she was doing her first big show in the year 1992. The designer says she has been in extreme shock ever since she learnt about the passing away of the former model and designer.
Talking about the work she did with Simar, Madhu says, “I still remember that I met Simar in the year 1992, before I was going to Goa for my first big, ensemble show.
We had to do some stills for the promotion of that show and we decided to do it in Old Delhi. When I first saw her, I found her to be very shy, but she looked so graceful, elegant and very pretty. I was surprised that when she was in front of the camera, she was completely a different person, so confident and perfect. That shoot was the most memorable shoot with her.”
After that shoot, Simar and Madhu stayed connected for many shows. Madhu says that Simar was not just loving, but she would go out of her way to help people. “She stood by me when I did my first solo show in the year 1997. She was the one who helped me put together that show, coordinated with the models and helped in every way she could. That was one thing that made her so dear to everyone who knew her. If she knew you, she would do everything to help you,” says Madhu, adding that as a designer Simar had a great understanding of craft and design. “I have always loved her sensibility towards design. At a time when everyone was doing Indo-western or western, she did such impressive Indian wear and created her mark with that,” says Madhu, adding, “I will always remember her as a gentle, beautiful soul gone too soon."
