Get 'waist'ed!
Bid goodbye to those ultra-low bottoms, this season waistlines are going higher, we find.
You can either love it or hate it, but you can’t stop it. After years and years of going low, the high waist look is finally back in vogue. When model Kate Moss was spotted wearing a pair of high-waisted jeans, she pretty much managed to launch the craze. Jennifer Aniston took to the sexy high-waisted skirts in her latest flick ‘The Bounty Hunter’ and Kim Kardashian, Mischa Barton and Ashley Olsen have also been seen on many occasions in trendy high-waisted bottoms.

Closer home, it’s actresses Sonam Kapoor and Neha Dhupia who have aced the trend. And whether you prefer yours, chest high or simply a few inches above, skinny and fitted or flare, there are plenty of skirts and jeans to choose from.
Designer Maheka Mirpuri says “I like the look, its very trendy and stylish. Tight fitted shirts with high-waisted trousers look smart; you can team the shorts and skirts with fun off-shoulder tops.” However, she advises not to be a victim to fashion trends — “If you’re comfortable with it and can carry it off, only then should you wear it.” She also believes that the high-waist look suits only certain body types — those who are tall and have slim waists. High-waist skirts or jeans are generally body clinging and show off your figure, so if you have a tiny waist you should try one!
Designer Abhishek Dutta is of a similar opinion. He says, “You have to have a very narrow waist to carry it off. The focal point in these type of garments is your waist line. It has been ‘in’ since last spring and is still popular as it allows you to flaunt your body especially in this figure conscious age.” He advises investing in high-waisted short skirts for summer, or teaming floral tops with a solid coloured high-waist trouser.
High-waisted skirts have steadily made their way to the most fashionable closets this year. Jeans and shorts are also a top pick, best paired with a ruffled blouse or tucked in tank tops for a silhouette-enhancing look. For work or dressier occasions, the high-waisted skirts offer plenty of comfort and looks smart and formal too. Krishna Mehta, designer believes that this look is ideal for all body types, “It could make slightly plumper women look slimmer, especially Indian women who have curvy hips will get a leaner look.” She says she’s really glad it’s back in fashion as high-waist is her favourite! Adding, “Actress Audrey Hepburn looked so beautiful in high-waisted trousers. Think of yourself as an elegant woman who wants to be comfortable and this look will suit you perfectly and enhance your feminity.”
