Islamic (Hijri) New Year: Heartfelt wishes, messages, and greetings to share with friends and family
The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year or 1 Muharram, marks the beginning of a new lunar year in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the Hijrah—the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE—which represents not just a historical event but a powerful spiritual journey of faith, resilience, and transformation.
This sacred moment offers a precious opportunity for Muslims to pause, reflect, and renew their intentions. It reminds us that, like the Prophet’s journey, we too can embark on new spiritual paths, turning away from past missteps and stepping into the future with renewed faith and purpose.
This year, the Islamic (Hijri) New Year for 1447 AH is expected to begin on Thursday, June 26, with the new lunar month of Muharram starting at sunset and continuing into June 27, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon.
The time of reflection and renewal:
As we enter this month, it’s also an opportunity to renew our intentions. This is a time to make heartfelt resolutions that can strengthen our connection with Allah. We can resolve to deepen our knowledge of our faith and commit to serving others with compassion and humility. These intentions can be a guiding light throughout the year, encouraging us to strive for personal and spiritual growth.
Prayer holds a special place during Muharram. We are encouraged to pray with sincerity, offering additional voluntary (nafl) prayers and engaging with the Qur’an. Making dua for guidance not only nurtures our relationship with Allah but also reinforces our sense of community, as we pray for the well-being of ourselves and others.
Moreover, this month inspires us to give to those in need. Embracing generosity and compassion allows us to connect with our fellow human beings, highlighting the beauty of sharing what we have with those less fortunate. As the month unfolds, let us open our hearts and hands, remembering our shared humanity.
Traditions and celebrations:
While Islamic tradition does not ascribe special rituals to the first day of Muharram, many communities engage in spiritual practices that set a positive tone for the year ahead. One cherished tradition is reading the Qur’an and contemplating its verses, allowing its wisdom to resonate within us. This reflection can provide a sense of peace and clarity as we embark on a new journey.
Offering extra prayers, whether at mosques or in the comfort of our homes, is another meaningful way to connect with Allah and seek His guidance. We can also make dua for ourselves, our families, and the broader Muslim ummah, recognizing the power of prayer to uplift our spirits and strengthen our bonds.
Practicing charity aligns beautifully with the values of Muharram. Sharing meals, offering assistance, and lending a helping hand to those in need exemplify the spirit of compassion that this month encourages. Fasting on Ashura (10 Muharram), in keeping with the Prophet’s tradition, serves as a reminder of gratitude and remembrance, enriching our connection to history and faith.
As we navigate through Muharram, let’s embrace the opportunity for reflection, renewal, and growth, fostered in a community grounded in empathy and support.
