10 Buzzwords that defined 2014

This year was all about technology, if we're to go by words that defined the year.

With the greater use of smartphones and internet, here's the list of words that have made the cut when it comes to defining 2014.

FOMO: Move over YOLO (you only live once), 2014 was all about the anxiety related to the idea of doing everything and missing out on nothing. The fear of missing out, especially due to posts online on social networking sites, was the biggest phobia of them all. (Thinkstock Photos/Getty Images)

Horrex: Sunny Leone and sexiness made their presence felt over the last couple of years in Bollywood. But, she took her sex appeal a notch higher when she added horror to it with her team calling Ragini MMS 2 a horrex film — a new genre added to the film lexicon.

NaMo: This was indeed the year of the tea vendor-turned-Indian Prime Minister — Narendra Modi, who has been vying over many platforms to be the person of the year in different polls. His charisma worked with his clean sweep at the polls, and had young India cheering him on too.

Hipster: Fashion got a new word in the dictionary. The hipster is the gen-next-wannabe, who needs to be in sync with all that is in vogue. This would not just mean clothes and accessories, but also being in sync with the music and movies that youngsters follow.

Ebola: The deadly virus made news as the most-feared disease this year, with many cases being reported in Africa, followed by some outside the continent. This also led to several celebrities fighting to eradicate the cause, with charity songs and other productions taking centrestage.

MoM: The Mangalyaan mission — called Mars Orbiter Mission, or MoM in short — was one of the biggest successes of 2014, with the world cheering India on for getting on to the Mars' orbit in their maiden attempt itself. Many memes, tweets and cartoons ensured that it was in the news for a while.

Emoji: In keeping with being young, one no longer talks with words when chatting over the phone on messaging platforms. Instead, one uses emojis, which are symbolic representatives of what they want to express — be it a drink or dancing.

Swiping: Dating got a new term online in 2014. One didn't need to befriend someone through an add button. Instead, a popular dating app this year gave access to people to swipe left or right, with options of 'Like' and 'Nope'. Did you swipe right or left?

Vaping: While e-cigarettes have been in the market for long, the term for using them made it to the dictionary only this year. Vaping, which refers to smoking the vapours from these e-sticks, became a rage with many of those who intended to quit the actual cancer stick.

Selfie stick: If last year was the year of the selfie, this year, collective selfies or usies made news. And to ensure that no one gets cut off, the selfie stick was was the invented which allows people to click group selfies without the fear of being cropped out.
