Alternative words storytellers are known with

Writing is just one form of the art of storytelling, a tradition as old as human society. Stories aren't just a part of culture, they define and help shape it. One can learn a lot about a culture by the tales it creates and values. With a little foresight, one can also see how the repetition of these tales can influence the coming generations and their psyche.

Though writing is an ancient craft, equal education for all is recent in human history and so reading as a form of enjoying stories is a relatively new form of enjoying fictional or real stories, before that, and even before writing, tales were enjoyed through telling, and those who told tales were respected and appreciated for their talent and contribution. Even today the art of oral storytelling is thriving. Here are some different words for storytellers and how they have changed over time.
Definitions taken from dictionary.com
2/9

Minstrel

Definition: A medieval poet and musician who sang or recited while accompanying himself on a stringed instrument, either as a member of a noble household or as an itinerant troubadour.

-A musician, singer, or poet.
A minstrel in some cases could also refer to a group that performed stories with music and not just a solo performer, though sometimes it was just the main vocalist who was called the minsteral. Many modern acapella bands could be similar to what minsterals as are performance poets

3/9

Bard

Definition: (formerly) a person who composed and recited epic or heroic poems, often while playing the harp, lyre, or the like.
-one of an ancient Celtic order of composers and reciters of poetry.
any poet.
-the bard, William Shakespeare.

A bard is similar to a minsteral but they don't have to have music accompanying their story. Willam Shakespeare was so popular as storyteller the words 'The Bard' simply refer to him. It's a word that's evolved with time and now can be used to refer to a storyteller who doesn't have to be one who reads aloud but it still conjures an image of one who recites a tale. Slam poets or other forms of performance poets are the bards of today.

4/9

Anecdotist

Definition: a collector or teller of anecdotes.

Every family has an anecdotist, you know the relative who turns a simple run-in with a friend at the store into a story of destiny bringing two people together? They can never relate an incident in a sentence and they usually put an interesting twist to it. Comedians are anecdotists, for they put a humourous twist on a simple incident for entertainment.

5/9

Fabulist

Definition: a person who invents or relates fables.

-a liar.

This word often is used to indicate someone is a liar because a fable is a false tale, usually a work of fiction with a reason. It could be a moral tale or a lie designed to make the person about whom the story is seem better or worse.

Fable is defined as:

- a short tale to teach a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters; apologue:
the fable of the tortoise and the hare; Aesop's fables.
-a story not founded on fact:
This biography is largely a self-laudatory fable.
-a story about supernatural or extraordinary persons or incidents; legend:
the fables of gods and heroes.

So technically all parents making up moral tales, mytho-fiction authors and comic book writers can be fabulists too, so lets reclaim the word for those whose stories show fabulous creativity.

6/9

Raconteur

Definition: a person who is skilled in relating stories and anecdotes interestingly.

A raconteur is similar to an anecdotist or a fabulist but without the double meaning of being a liar. Also it's far more fun to say aloud than the other two so it's a good word to use in a spoken tale.

7/9

Author

Definition: a person who writes a novel, poem, essay, etc.; the composer of a literary work, as distinguished from a compiler, translator, editor, or copyist.
-the literary production or productions of a writer:
-to find a passage in an author.
-the maker of anything; creator; originator:
-the author of a new tax plan.
-Computers. the writer of a software program, especially a hypertext or multimedia application.

We all know what an author is but we should give them some appreciation, performance storytelling is an art, but often they're the creativity behind it. Also it takes something to write a piece and edit it to perfection.

8/9

Narrator

Definition: A person who gives an account or tells the story of events, experiences, etc.
-A person who adds spoken commentary to a film, television program, slide show, etc.

A narrator is different because the word implies that they're not the author of the tale they're narrating while with a bard or most of the others, it's implied that they might have written or experienced what they're sharing. While narrators have many dry non-storytelling related jobs, narrator is also the official word used for those reading audiobooks and some are truly respected and sought after. It's also used for audio/radio play actors and animation voice over artists.

9/9

Kathak

Definition: A form of North Indian classical dancing that tells a story

Kathak literally means storyteller so any storyteller can call themselves a kathak, but since the old dance form has only gotten more popular with time, the word Kathak refers to the performer of the dance Kathak. The dance narrates a story and it's a beautiful form of storytelling.
