Hair fall after 25 is not ‘normal’

Losing hair in your mid-20s seems more than a little unfair in life, doesn’t it? In our 20s, women usually expect to flaunt their thick and healthy mane, but unfortunately, many start losing hair significantly in their mid- or late 20s. But, wait, there have to be some reasons, right? Several reasons may cause hair loss in your 20s, such as early-onset female pattern hair loss, traction alopecia, hormonal changes, and others. The main point is that it's important to speak to a female hair loss specialist and determine what to do and what to avoid. Let’s take a quick look at some of the primary reasons why women in their 20s experience a significant amount of hair loss.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss caused mainly by white blood cells attacking the hair follicles. This starts with patchy hair loss, occurring on the beard, eyebrows, armpits, chest, and finally the scalp. Alopecia affects at least 2% of the general population and is more common among people in their 20s and 30s.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a type of temporary hair loss or shedding that exceeds the normal 50-100 hairs lost every day. It leads to diffuse hair loss across the scalp, which can be triggered by any injury, illness, or hormonal changes. It affects women and usually resolves in 3-6 months, once the trigger is removed. But if it lasts more than 6 months - which is usually expected in women, visit a specialist right away.

Stress

This may sound dramatic to some, but stress is another established cause of hair fall for women in their 20s. The pressure on young women to excel in everything in life, along with several other situations, can create a serious long-term effect on stress levels, which can ultimately cause stress-induced hair loss. High stress may also be a risk factor for female pattern hair loss, but it is never the main causative factor.

Hormonal changes

Hair loss in younger women can also be linked to hormonal fluctuations. This ranges from consuming birth control pills to pregnancy or female health conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis, which affect hormone and stress levels, ultimately leading to telogen effluvium. So, if you’re worried that hormones are indeed affecting your hair pattern, then it’s time to speak to a doctor.
