Hard water effects on skin: Signs your tap water is causing facial acne

2/9

Can hard water cause pimples?

When it comes to acne, we always tend to look at the most obvious reasons, like skincare, diet, genetics, hormonal imbalance, and more. But have you ever thought that your hard tap water might be the real reason? Hard water adds impurities at times, which leads to breakouts, clogged pores, irritation, and dry skin.

Why is it so?

Hard water contains high levels of minerals such as magnesium and calcium, which create havoc on the skin. These minerals disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and promote the breakdown of collagen, leaving our skin more vulnerable. If you see your showerheads, faucets, tubs, and drains get a white film over time, then understand that you’ve got hard water.

How to test at home?

You cannot differentiate hard vs soft water with the naked eye. So, simply fill half a transparent bottle with tap water and add some dish soap. Shake it and observe the layers, foam, and bubbles. If you see so, then it’s typically soft water. But if you see a milky white residue, then you’re using hard water.

Breakouts around cheeks and jawline?

Hard water leaves mineral residue on the skin, which clogs the pores. So, if you’re witnessing stubborn acne around the cheeks, jawline, or hairline, it is a direct sign.

Is the skin feeling tight after every wash?

If your face feels dry and tight immediately after cleansing, then your tap water might be stripping your skin’s natural oils and damaging the skin barrier as well, which is leading to breakouts and inflammation.

Witnessing a small, bumpy texture?

If you’re witnessing small, tiny, uniform bumps that are also mistaken for closed comedones and fungal acne, then it's not that, but it's mineral deposits from hard water.

Experiencing flaky and oily skin?

When your facial barrier gets compromised, your skin starts producing excess oil and gets dry at the same time. This confusing combination can also lead to intense acne. When the barrier is compromised, skin may overproduce oil to compensate - leading to the confusing combo of dryness and acne.

How to protect your skin from hard water?

Install a water softener that exchanges calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, reducing the mineral content of the water, and switch to gentle products. This further reduces the side effects of hard water on skin and protects the skin barrier.
