How often should you shampoo during summer? Experts reveal the ideal routine

Summer Hair Care Myths

Summer is officially here, and with soaring temperatures comes that familiar sticky, sweaty feeling. You step outside for just a few minutes, and suddenly your scalp feels like a grease trap. Naturally, the first instinct is to jump into the shower and scrub your hair every single day. But is that actually doing your locks any favors?

Summer Hair Wash Rules

Dermatologists and trichologists generally agree that there isn’t a single "magic number" that works for everyone. However, the heat, humidity, and extra sweat mean your winter washing routine simply won't cut it right now. You need a solid summer strategy to keep your scalp microbiome balanced and prevent annoying inflammation. Here is how to figure out your perfect schedule.

Your Hair Type Dictates the Rules

Let's get straight to it. If you have fine or straight hair, you already know the struggle. Oil and sweat slide down straight hair shafts incredibly fast, leaving you looking greasy and weighed down before the day is even over. For you, washing daily or every other day is usually the sweet spot to prevent clogged follicles.

Got normal to wavy hair? You have a bit more breathing room. Lathering up two to three times a week is generally enough to wash away the day's grime without stripping away the natural oils your hair actually needs.

Now, if your hair is thick, coarse, naturally dry, or beautifully curly, put the shampoo bottle down. These hair types naturally crave moisture. The spiral shape of curls and coils makes it super hard for natural oils to travel from the scalp down to the ends. Washing too much in the summer heat will strip away the little sebum you have, leaving your hair a brittle, frizzy mess.

Stick to once or twice a week for thick hair, and anywhere from once a week to once a fortnight for curls. Just remember to cleanse that scalp thoroughly when you do finally wash!

What Is Your Scalp Telling You?

Let’s talk about the root of the issue. If you naturally have an oily scalp, the summer heat is going to kick your sebum production into overdrive. Leaving all that excess oil sitting there traps dirt and sweat, which is a fast track to irritation. You'll want to cleanse daily or every alternate day.

Dealing with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis? There is a massive myth floating around that washing your hair less prevents shedding. It’s actually the exact opposite. Letting sweat and oil build up feeds the natural yeasts on your scalp. This triggers them to go into overdrive, leading to itchiness, severe inflammation, and yes, increased hair fall. Aim for three to four washes a week to keep things under control.

Factoring in the Gym and the Pool

We all love a good summer workout or a dip in the pool to cool off. But how you handle the aftermath matters. If you are hitting the gym hard and sweating buckets doing outdoor cardio every day, you don’t necessarily need a full-blown shampoo session every time. Over-washing will just dry out your strands. Instead, try a thorough rinse with plain water. Give your scalp a good massage under the showerhead to physically remove the sweat.

Swimmers, pay close attention. The moment you step out of the chlorinated pool or the salty ocean, hit the showers. Salt and chlorine are notorious for stripping the hair cuticle. Rinse with fresh water immediately, and always follow up with a clarifying swimmer's shampoo and a deep conditioner to stop long-term damage in its tracks.

At the end of the day, your perfect routine comes down to listening to your hair. Find the balance that keeps your scalp clean and your ends hydrated!
