Harmful ingredients in skincare

We all want to maintain our health but look our best too. That often makes us follow a skincare routine that gives us a glowing complexion. A lot of skin care products on the market promise to improve the appearance of your skin. Certain products have substances that appear to be advantageous at first glance. However, it might potentially damage your health and hurt your skin. Certain compounds might not be dangerous in small doses, but they might be dangerous in larger doses or when used often over an extended length of time.

It's not as simple as it seems to stay away from potentially harmful substances in skin care products. Before being sold in stores, skincare products do not require FDA approval. Legally, manufacturers must ensure that the chemicals they use in their products are used in acceptable proportions. However, this does not always imply that ingredients cannot have an impact on your health.

2/6

Aluminum

According to a 2015 PubMed study, aluminum may promote breast cancer cell migration and urge more investigation. These are toxic metals that can interfere with the endocrine system's normal operation by having oestrogen-like effects in our bodies.

Nearly all personal care products typically contain this, particularly deodorants that are antiperspirant.

3/6

Benzalkonium chloride

A common preservative in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and personal hygiene items is benzoalkonium chloride (BAC). Because of its antibacterial qualities, it prevents viruses, fungus, and bacteria from contaminating your personal hygiene items. This is essential to maintaining the sterility and usability of products.

However, BACs can cause allergic reactions and are known to irritate the skin and eyes. You might want to stay away from BACs in your skincare products if you have a history of allergies. BACs have been connected to antibiotic resistance and have an impact on the environment.

4/6

Parabens

Be wary of names such as butylparaben and methylparaben. According to a 2017 Environ Toxicol study, methylparaben may interfere with androgenic and estrogenic receptors that may impact the prostate.

Preservatives called parabens are added to cosmetics, shampoos, toothpastes, cleansers, deodorants, and other products to extend their shelf life. They have been shown to cause infertility by interfering with the body's reproductive and endocrine systems. Long-term exposure has been linked to cancer, and they can also irritate the skin.

5/6

Formaldehyde

In skincare products, formaldehyde is frequently utilized as a preservative. It is a colorless gas that stops germs from growing. Products that include formaldehyde include nail polish, hair gels, nail hardeners, shampoos, deodorants, lotions, and cosmetics. It is linked to neurotoxicity, scalp burns, hair loss, developmental toxins, and asthma.

Formaldehyde levels in personal care products, such as shampoos, are generally "far below hazardous" to human health, according to the American Cancer Society. According to the group, keratin hair smoothing procedures have the potential to dangerously increase indoor air concentrations.

6/6

Oxybenzone

Wearing sunscreen is essential for preventing skin damage and reducing the likelihood of developing skincare issues. However, you should apply the appropriate kind of sunscreen. Oxybenzone, which is present in certain chemical sunscreens, can enter the bloodstream through the skin. Although it is thought to absorb light, it actually does more harm to the body than good. Endocrine disruptors are what these sunscreen compounds are.
