5 habits that will keep your skin young for a long time

These habits will keep you young

Youthful, glowing skin isn’t just the result of good genes or expensive serums. It’s the outcome of consistent, mindful habits that support your skin from within and without. In a world flooded with quick fixes, the real secret to age-defying beauty lies in a few powerful everyday rituals. These five habits are easy to adopt and can make a lasting difference to how your skin looks and feels, well into your later years.

2/9

Prioritise sun protection every single day

If there’s one skincare habit that tops every dermatologist’s list, it’s sun protection. UV rays are one of the biggest culprits behind premature ageing, causing everything from fine lines and wrinkles to sun spots and a breakdown in skin elasticity. And no, it's not just beach days you need to worry about, everyday exposure, even through windows, counts.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even on cloudy days. Choose a formula suited to your skin type: gel-based or matte-finish sunscreens work well for oily skin, while creamier ones are perfect for dry skin. Don’t forget to reapply every 2–3 hours, especially if you're outdoors or wearing makeup. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and seeking shade during peak hours (10 am to 4 pm) can also go a long way in protecting your youthful glow.

3/9

Stick to a consistent skincare routine

While trendy products come and go, a consistent skincare routine tailored to your skin type is the key to long-term results. You don’t need a ten-step Korean routine, just the right steps that deliver what your skin really needs.

Start with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and excess oil without stripping the skin. Follow it with a hydrating toner or essence, and then layer on targeted treatments like serums rich in vitamin C (for brightening), hyaluronic acid (for hydration), or niacinamide (for overall skin resilience). Moisturising seals everything in, while sunscreen during the day is non-negotiable.

Don’t forget your night routine either. Skin regenerates while you sleep, so using ingredients like retinol (in your late 20s and beyond), peptides, or ceramides can help repair damage and boost collagen production. Remember consistency beats intensity. A simple routine done daily is far more effective than sporadic bursts of skincare.

4/9

Hydrate inside and out

Hydration is the cornerstone of youthful skin. Dehydrated skin looks dull, tired, and prone to fine lines. Drinking at least 2–3 litres of water a day keeps your skin supple and aids detoxification. If you find plain water boring, infuse it with cucumber, mint, lemon, or berries for a tasty antioxidant kick.

But hydration isn’t just internal. Topical hydration is equally important. Look for moisturisers with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane - these ingredients help retain moisture and plump up the skin. Even oily skin needs hydration, skipping it can lead to overproduction of oil and breakouts.

Additionally, avoid habits that dry your skin out, like excessive caffeine, alcohol, or long hot showers. Opt for lukewarm water, especially in colder months, and use a humidifier if your environment is particularly dry.

5/9

Eat a skin-friendly diet

Your skin is a reflection of what you feed your body. Antioxidant-rich foods protect the skin from environmental damage and slow down the ageing process. Focus on a colourful diet, berries, leafy greens, tomatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, nuts, and seeds are all great choices. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in walnuts, flaxseeds, and fatty fish like salmon, help maintain the skin’s lipid barrier and reduce inflammation.

Cut back on sugar and processed foods, as they contribute to glycation, a process that damages collagen and accelerates skin ageing. Likewise, limit fried foods and dairy if you notice flare-ups like acne or dullness after consuming them.

Consider supplements like collagen peptides, biotin, or vitamin E after consulting with your dermatologist. These can help fill nutritional gaps and support long-term skin health.

6/9

Prioritise sleep and stress management

Beauty sleep isn’t a myth, it’s a science-backed necessity. While you sleep, your skin goes into repair mode, producing new cells and collagen. Lack of sleep can result in dark circles, puffiness, and a dull complexion over time. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night and try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

Stress is another silent ager. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, a hormone that can break down collagen and trigger inflammation and acne. Chronic stress accelerates ageing and weakens your skin’s barrier function.

Incorporate stress-busting practices into your day: yoga, meditation, regular exercise, journaling, or even a good skincare ritual can be therapeutic. When your mind is at ease, your skin responds positively.

7/9

Start early

Youthful skin isn’t a destination, it’s a lifestyle. There’s no one magic product or overnight miracle, but these five habits can absolutely transform your skin over time. Sun protection, a smart skincare routine, deep hydration, mindful eating, and adequate sleep create the foundation for healthy, radiant skin that stands the test of time. The earlier you start, the better the payoff but it’s never too late to glow up. Your future self (and skin) will thank you.

8/9

Try yoga

Yoga is a powerful, natural tool for anti-ageing, offering both physical and mental rejuvenation. Regular practice improves blood circulation, enhances flexibility, and boosts collagen production, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Certain asanas like Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), and Matsyasana (Fish Pose) are known to stimulate the thyroid gland, detoxify the body, and revitalise the skin. Beyond the physical benefits, yoga also helps manage stress, one of the key contributors to premature ageing by calming the nervous system and balancing hormones. With a consistent yoga routine, not only do you feel younger and more energetic, but your skin begins to reflect that inner harmony and vitality too.

9/9

Stay happy!

One of the most underrated skincare secrets? Staying genuinely happy. Your emotional well-being has a direct impact on your skin when you’re joyful and stress-free, it shows. A positive mindset helps reduce cortisol levels, which in turn keeps issues like acne, dullness, and premature ageing at bay. Simply put, when you’re happy on the inside, your skin glows on the outside. So, go ahead laugh more, travel often, and prioritise your peace. Your complexion will thank you.
