NEW DELHI: A viral video from Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh in which a policeman is caught kicking a complainant has led to consequences with the cop getting suspended from his post. An elderly man named Ramesh, visibly injured, can be seen in the video touching a cop's feet, presumably asking for protection from his nephew Ramdhani, who injured him in a fight over land.
As per the police statement, Ramesh's nephew Ramdhani barged into Ramesh's house and tried to attack him with an axe over some ongoing land dispute. The incident caused minor injury to Ramesh near his neck. The family then called the police to complain about the incident. However, things heated up when a man reached the spot with a camera and said, "Honest people are being oppressed." This enraged another cop, named Abhishek Kumar, standing nearby as he violently kicked in the camera's direction.Soon after the video began gaining popularity in the public domain, more and more people came forward raising the issue and demanding a proper investigation into the matter. Following the virality of the video, Sonbhadra police issued an official statement giving the details regarding the incident.
Rajesh Kumar Rai, the circle officer of Dudhi, Sonbhadra, issued a video statement."A viral video on social media from the Vindhamganj police station area, showing inappropriate behaviour by a police officer and regarding the suspension of the police officer, a statement by the Circle Officer of Dudhi, Sonbhadra, Mr Rajesh Kumar Rai," said the post.
He further mentioned in the video that the cop in question was later suspended by the police superintendent. He also assured the people that further enquiry is being done in the same case.In a time when faith in law enforcement is being tested across the nation, this episode from Sonbhadra highlights the urgent need for introspection within the system. For the public, it serves as a reminder that trust must be earned, not demanded. For the police, that service must always walk hand in hand with accountability.
