Video showing officer’s threats to TMC pick’s kin sparks row
Kolkata: EC's police observer Ajay Pal Sharma sparked a controversy after a viral video showed him warning the family of TMC's Bhangor candidate Jahangir Khan during a Monday raid, accompanied by CAPF personnel.
In the clip, he is heard saying, "Jahangir's family members are standing here; tell him properly - we're repeatedly getting reports that his people are issuing threats; we'll take strict action over it. Don't end up crying and regretting later."
Khan, who left his home 36 hours before voting, told reporters, "We will file an FIR and go to court."
EC sources said the raid followed complaints that Khan had been intimidating voters ahead of polling. CEO Manoj Agarwal said, "If the candidate is a miscreant, action will be taken." He said observers are free to act to ensure fair polls, and any complaint against an officer would be examined by MHA.
TMC spokesperson Riju Datta alleged misconduct, saying Sharma "should not be under the impression that this is UP" and accused him of threatening women. The party also claimed that late-night raids in Falta involved harassment of residents. "We will drag each one of you to court... no political backing would be able to save you," the party said in a statement.
Extending support, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote on X: "A thorough investigation will be conducted..."
BJP called the allegations "a sign of desperation", and accused TMC of inciting unrest amid efforts to ensure peaceful polling.
