KOLKATA: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu called on Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence on Monday to discuss opposition strategy.

Naidu’s initiative, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah are set to convene an NDA meeting in Delhi, is being seen as a bid to keep the opposition united. He came to Kolkata after holding talks with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and also with Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow. Naidu has also met NCP president Sharad Pawar and CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury in Delhi.

Neither Naidu nor Banerjee spoke to the press as to what transpired at the 45-minute meeting. Ahead of his Kolkata visit, however, Naidu had spoken about it in broad terms: “We will discuss politics... We even requested her to come to Delhi for meeting the Election Commission.”

Naidu has been moving around across the country and has held several rounds of discussions with top opposition leaders in a bid to unite them and form an alliance to stake claim to form the next government in case the NDA falls short of the majority mark.
