Speeding car crashes in Western Express Highway, 2 teenagers dead

Two teenagers died after a car with four friends rammed into a road divider on the at Vile Parle around 4.30am on Saturday. The two collegians -- Sartak Kaushik and Jalaj Dhir, both 18 - were seated in the rear while on their way from Bandra to Goregaon. The car was going at "120 to 150kmph when it went out of control", police said.

Sahil Menda was driving and Jedan Jimmy, both also 18, was sitting next to him. Menda, who has been arrested, attributed the cause of the crash to a "moment of indecision - whether to continue on the highway or to swerve onto the service road at Vile Parle", said a police officer.

Menda has claimed that he had not consumed alcohol. "His blood sample has been collected to verify his claim," said an officer. Earlier on Saturday, the friends had taken an autorickshaw to a fifth friend's Andheri home.

Jimmy told police: "...We consumed some liquor and food". Menda was with them, then left for home and joined them again later. Past midnight, they decided to go for a drive. Around 3.30am they got into Menda's car and first left for Bandra, Jimmy told police.
