Six farmers in west Vidarbha region have committed suicide in the past three days owing to insurmountable debt.
AKOLA (MAHARASHTRA): Six farmers in west Vidarbha region have committed suicide in the past three days owing to insurmountable debt, police and NGOs said here on Tuesday. Ambadas Morkar (65) of Shivagi Nagar Dhamni village bordering Washim district ended his life by consuming poison on Sunday, police said. Another debt-ridden farmer Babarao Motiram Mhatarmare of Mohri village in the same district also committed suicide, they said.
Dnyaneshwar Baliram Khadke (45) of Yelgaon village bordering Buldana district died after consuming poison on March 19, they said. Leader of Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, Kishor Tiwari, said that besides these suicides, three other farmers -- G A Kale Mangurla Khed and Kapil Yadav Bhavre Tadsawli of Yavatmal and R G Navathe of Wardha also took the extreme step on Sunday.
