NEW DELHI: This Independence Day the Prime Minister plans to stress in his speech the importance of appointing people on merit in acadenic institutions.
This, sources say, should not be construed to mean that the PM opposes the reservation, to which the UPA government has committed itself in its CMP, and that it will continue at the level of admission to institutions and entry to various services.

The PM, however, these sources added, is as concerned as everyone in the UPA about the infiltration of RSS elements, particularly in the areas of education, culture and security agencies. While in the first two, the appointees came from outside and are relatively easy to replace, in the case of the third, they are from within the system — career civil servants who can, at best, be given some innocuous postings.
The PM, sources say, may be tough but he is wary of weeding out everyone associated with the previous administration.
