Rahul Gandhi US Visit Live Updates: Indian democracy broken from last 10 years, now it is fighting back, says Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi US Visit Live Updates: During his address in Dallas, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi discussed unemployment, education, and technology. He pointed out that both India and the West are facing job crises, suggesting India should enhance its own production capabilities. Gandhi explained that while many countries struggle with unemployment, others like China and Vietnam are not, attributing this to a historical shift in global production. He observed that production moved from the West to South Korea, Japan, and now China, due to the West’s retreat from manufacturing.
Gandhi argued that India needs to rethink its approach to manufacturing and align it with democratic principles. Reflecting on his Bharat Jodo Yatra, he mentioned how it reshaped his political views by incorporating the idea of love into politics. On education, he criticized the lack of respect for skilled individuals and called for better integration between education and vocational training. Regarding Artificial Intelligence, Gandhi acknowledged its potential to both displace and create jobs, urging thoughtful management of its impact. He made these remarks during a live interaction with students at the University of Texas in Dallas.

Rahul Gandhi US Visit Live: LoP Rahul Gandhi to visit US from September 8 to 10; to hold interactions at Texas University, among others
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will visit the US from September 8 to September 10 during which he will hold numerous interactions in Washington DC and Dallas, including at the University of Texas.
Chairman of Indian Overseas Congress, Sam Pitroda on Saturday shared details of Rahul Gandhi's first visit to the US after becoming the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
"Since Rahul Gandhi has become the leader of the opposition, I as chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, with a presence in 32 countries have been bombarded with requests from Indian diaspora diplomats, academicians, businessmen, leaders, international media and many others for interactions with Rahul Gandhi," Pitroda said in a video statement.
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns over the state of democracy in India, claiming that it has been severely compromised for the past decade. Speaking at a press conference at the National Press Club on Tuesday, Gandhi said, "Indian democracy for the last 10 years was broken. It's fighting back, but it was broken."
He recalled specific political events, notably the BJP’s takeover of Maharashtra, where legislators from his party switched sides. Gandhi commented, "I’ve watched as our legislators were bought and suddenly became BJP legislators." Despite these challenges, he expressed hope for the revival of democratic processes, stating, "I’m confident that it’ll fight back."
Responding to a question about recent election outcomes, Gandhi pointed to structural inequalities. He stressed that although Indian voters are resilient, a level playing field is essential. He cited his experience in the last election, saying, "We fought an election with our bank accounts frozen... Now, you can have a resilient voter, but you still need to run campaigns, have conversations, and hold meetings."
Gandhi also highlighted his own legal battles, including over 20 cases against him, and a prison sentence for defamation. "The Indian voter requires an architecture to work on, which is not there," he remarked.
He then turned his attention to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of dismantling democratic institutions while ironically showing public respect for the Constitution. Gandhi said, "On one hand, he's destroying the Constitution... but then the Indian people forced him to place it on his head."
During an event with the Indian diaspora in Herndon, Virginia, Gandhi recounted how the Congress party's bank accounts were frozen just months before the Lok Sabha elections. This left them without funds for essential campaigning activities. Describing the crisis, Gandhi shared, "Unki toh hawa likal gayi thi (they had lost confidence) about what to do next."
As Gandhi wraps up his three-day US tour, he has scheduled meetings with US lawmakers on Capitol Hill. His visit, according to Sam Pitroda, president of the Indian Overseas Congress, has been productive, involving interactions with administration officials, students, and a large Indian community event.
