NEW DELHI: With a view to encouraging the creative contribution to Indian cinema, President Pratibha Patil on Friday directed that the prize money of National Film Awards be increased five times. "The President has decided the prize money be increased by five times", said Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunsi at the National Films Awards 2005 presentation ceremony here.
Patil conferred the best actor award on Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan for his role in Black and the coveted Dadasaheb Phalke Award on noted director Shyam Benegal bagged for his "outstanding contribution" to cinema. Patil also honoured Sarika with the best actress award for her role of a crusading mother in Parzania and best film award on Bengali film Kaalpurush, directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta, which deals with a man's struggle with his father's memories. Controversial movie Parzania, based on the 2002 Gujarat riots, garnered the best direction award for Rahul Dholakia. The jury rated Kaalpurush - Memories In The Mist, as the best feature film. The award comprises Swarna Kamal and Rs 50,000 each for the film's producer and director.
